On Pentecost Christianity celebrates the birth of the church in renewed vigor when she remembers how the Holy Spirit was poured out for effective ministry.
Pentecost means Holy Spirit empowerment for God’s purpose, Jesus had promised the early believers power to fulfill his teaching. All Christians stand in awe when reading the account of Acts, 2 which describes the church’s encounter with the power of the Holy Spirit. The place was shaken! Visitors from all parts of the world who had made pilgrimage to Jerusalem heard the early Christians speaking the wonderful works of God. The church was empowered to fulfill her purpose in bringing hope and help to people in need.
Pentecost is a point of convergence for the people of God in the Synagogue and the church. It marks a historical meeting place where both Christian Church and the Jewish Community recognize God’s blessings. Pentecost is the biblical day that Moses came down delivering the Ten Commandments from Mount Sinai. The common heritage of Christian and Jews draws the people of faith together. Jerusalem is the city. Pentecost marks the occasion. The celebration of Pentecost in Jerusalem is the meeting place for God’s people.
