Begun under the reign of Akbar himself, the mausoleum was completed in 1613 under the supervision of his son Jahangir and clearly represents elements of styles preferred by each. It is a synthesis of the bold red sandstone, featured prominently in many of Akbar's structures, and the more delicate white marble favored by Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Surrounding the mausoleum are gardens laid out in four quadrants, while inside the four-story monument recently restored ceilings of blue and gold frescoes can be seen.
