Stop along the way at one of the many wineries and restaurants. Spend the next few days wandering the streets of Napa or historic Sonoma, with time to discover the many boutiques, galleries, and seasonal farmers' markets. You may also choose to take advantage of the natural beauty of the area and opt for one of the many outdoor activities, including canoeing, hiking, and horseback riding.     DAY 1, Monday - Arrive in San Francisco, Drive to Wine Country
    Welcome to San Francisco! Proceed to the Rental Car Center to pick up your car and begin your vacation in California. Drive north to the rolling golden hills of Napa and Sonoma, birthplace of wine in California, known for fragrant vineyards and landscapes of trellised grapevines. The scenic drive takes you through historic and picturesque towns like the culinary boomtown of Yountville, known for the famed French Laundry Restaurant, and the spa town of Calistoga Hot Springs, home to the legendary Old Faithful Geyser. Stop along the way at prestigious wineries and restaurants before your descent into the wine country with its spectacular views. Arrive at the hotel of your choice. Tonight, we suggest you experience some of the area’s fine cuisine coupled with excellent California wine

    DAY 2, Tuesday - Full day in Napa Valley or Sonoma
    A full day to enjoy all of the delights of this area. There are so many winery tours and wine tastings to choose from -- and so much to do. Now a food lover’s paradise, the area restaurants have introduced diverse tasting menus in all price ranges. Wander through the streets of Napa, the area’s oldest town, or visit the historic attractions in Sonoma, rich with 19th century buildings. There is time to discover the many boutiques, gift shops, antique stores, galleries and the many seasonal farmers’ markets. The region is also known for its natural beauty with many outdoor activities such as canoeing on the Russian River, hiking along the rural roads, horseback riding, or bicycling along the scenic trails. In the evening, after a world-class dinner, delight in a performance at the Napa Opera House or take in some jazz and enjoy the lively downtown nightlife

    DAY 3, Wednesday - Full day in Napa Valley or Sonoma
    Enjoy a second day to discover the wine lands of Napa or Sonoma. Be sure to make reservations at the more popular wineries for their tours or tastings and at the most popular restaurants. Consider a Hot Air Balloon ride affording breathtaking panoramic views, ending with a Champagne Brunch, or, visit the 400-acre wildlife sanctuary in an open-air jeep. If you want to turn the driving over to a train conductor then take the Napa Valley Wine Train, which runs a scenic route between Napa and St. Helena on restored railroad cars. In Sonoma, you can explore buildings from California’s Spanish and Mexican past and some wineries have cellars or tasting rooms dating back to the late 1800s. To learn more about Napa winemaking, visit the Rubicon Estate; walk through the old and charming ivy-covered château. Tonight, more wine and restaurant tastings await you

    DAY 4, Thursday - Drive to Lake Tahoe
    Depart the Napa or Sonoma Valley to stunning Lake Tahoe, the high Sierra paradise; it is the largest alpine lake in North America. En route, consider a stop in Sacramento, capital of the state and the oldest city in California founded during the famous Gold Rush era. Arrive in cobalt-blue Lake Tahoe, located in the northern section of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the Lake Tahoe area covers portions of five national forests, several state parks and rugged wilderness areas, straddling California and Nevada. In the winter, it is the mecca of skiing for the area; in summer, water sports, camping and hiking are the major activities. In the evening, if you want to go to the casino to gamble or enjoy some lavish shows, drive a short distance to Reno, known as the “Biggest Little City in the World”

    DAY 5, Friday - Full day in Lake Tahoe
    Explore the Lake Tahoe area by driving around the lake road through wooded flatlands and past beaches, climbing to the top of the lake, passing the developments and casinos on its northeastern and southeastern edges. Or, go out onto the pristine lake on a sightseeing cruise or kayaking trip. The day is yours to enjoy the many aquatic activities available on the lake. The mountains surrounding the lake are very popular for hiking and nature walks. Or, drive along Lakeshore Drive, with the most expensive real estate in Nevada. Many evening activities are available around the lake and in the nearby hotel/casinos
    Overnight: Lake Tahoe

    DAY 6, Saturday - Drive to San Francisco
    Depart Lake Tahoe to San Francisco. On your way, stop at a café in the delightful city of Sausalito, with its expansive yacht harbor, flower-covered hillsides and waterside esplanades lined with restaurants and piers. The town is just 2 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge on the northwestern edge of San Francisco. Then, perhaps continue on to Muir Woods National Monument with its majestic redwood trees, some almost 250 feet tall and 1000 years old. Walk along the winding trails through the Redwood groves crossing streams and abundant beds of ferns and flowers. Or, stop in Berkeley, home of the University of California, one of the nation’s top universities, known as the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement in the 60s. Time permitting, take one of the student-led tours of the university and its beautiful campus. Return your vehicle at the San Francisco Airport and independently transfer to your hotel

    DAY 7, Sunday - Full day in San Francisco
    Today, explore unforgettable San Francisco. The options are endless. Take a stroll along Fisherman’s Wharf and watch the sea lions in the Bay. You may set sail and cruise to notorious Alcatraz, the maximum-security prison in the Bay where you can walk the cellblocks where the Birdman of Alcatraz and Al Capone spent time. See the breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge before continuing to Golden Gate Park. Ride a Cable Car and enjoy the views and the steep hills, an experience you can't miss. If you’re in the mood for delicious chocolates, head to the early 20th century complex of Ghiradelli Square with its chocolate and souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants. Other not-to-be-missed visits include the famous San Francisco Zoo, Haight-Asbury and the Mission District. Tonight, it's your choice of fine restaurants, concerts and performances all over the city. For live music try the cosmopolitan North Beach area
    Overnight: San Francisco

    DAY 8, Monday - Return Home
    Dependent on your schedule, enjoy more time at leisure in San Francisco or transfer independently to the airport for your return flight
