Step into the past and enjoy the comforts of the present on this charming vacation. Begin your trip in Philadelphia, where you will pick up your rental car. Take in the city's historic sites, including Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Betsy Ross House. Consider a visit to the National Constitution Center to learn more about the nation's beginnings. Head west to Gettysburg, the site of the largest battle ever fought in the U.S. You can explore the Visitor's Center and Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War to learn more about the three day long battle. Perhaps you will visit the David Will's house, where President Lincoln stayed before giving the famed Gettysburg Address. From Gettysburg, head south for Shenandoah. Marvel at the scenic views and panoramic overlooks as you travel Skyline Drive, the main road through the national park. Stop at a visitor center and take a trail hike through the park.     SAMPLE ITINERARY
    The following are suggested sites that can be visited en route to your hotel.

    DAY 1, Saturday - Arrive in Philadelphia
    Arrive in Philadelphia and proceed to the Alamo Rental Car Center to pick up your rental car. Enjoy the remainder of your day in this historic city. Visit Independence Hall to view the iconic Liberty Bell and perhaps take a guided tour of the building, but be sure to call ahead of time. Pay a visit to the National Constitution Center to learn about the history of the United States' struggles and freedoms. Next, head to the Betsy Ross House, where the patriot who sewed the first American flag, as well as many other artisans and craftsmen, lived throughout the over 250 years since the building was built. Visit the US Mint to learn how US currency is made. Finish off your day with a Philly cheesesteak, a Philadelphia original and favorite, at one of the many famous cheesesteak eateries

    DAY 2, Sunday - Drive to Gettysburg
    Today, depart Philadelphia and head to Gettysburg, the site of the largest battle ever fought in the United States. On the way, perhaps pass through the Amish Country, where you'll discover how this group of people live their simple lives, without the modern conveniences of today. Continue to Gettysburg. Make a reservation ahead of time for a guided tour of the 6,000 acre battlefield, and learn about the three day long battle that was fought there during the Civil War. Explore the Visitor's Center and view the panoramic cyclorama painting of the Battle of Gettysburg, a must-see for any Gettysburg visit. You will also find the Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War, which includes interactive programs and exhibits from this historical time

    DAY 3, Monday - Full Day in Gettysburg
    Today, enjoy an entire day in Gettysburg to further explore its history. Pay a visit to the David Will's house, where President Abraham Lincoln stayed the night before his famed address to the nation. Experience the Gettysburg Diorama, a massive scale-model recreation of the Battle. Explore the Gettysburg Wax Museum to learn more about the Civil War era, as well as for excellent souvenir shopping; or choose to take a tour on horseback for a 19th century experience of the city. Visit the eternal flame at the Eternal Light Peace Memorial, which was dedicated in 1938 to the lives lost during the Battle of Gettysburg. Choose to explore the area's history further by visiting the Soliders National Museum, Lincoln Train Museum, Hall of Presidents & First Ladies, or the Jennie Wade House

    DAY 4, Tuesday - Drive to Shenandoah
    Today, epart for Shenandoah. Traverse Skyline Drive, the main road running through the bulk of the park. It has been designated a National Scenic Byway and spans over 105 miles. Many points of interest are marked with mileposts, including the 75 overlooks that provide beautiful panoramic views of the scenery. Be sure to stop at one of the visitor centers for information, trail guides, maps and other materials to help you further enjoy your visit to Shenandoah. Take a break from driving and head over to the 500 miles of hiking trails in the park to take in the beauty of nature by foot. There are many trails to choose from. You may choose to take a self-guided trail hike, or book a ranger-led trail hike

    DAY 5, Wednesday - Drive to Williamsburg
    Depart Shenandoah and drive to Williamsburg. Upon arrival in Colonial Williamsburg, be sure to stop by the visitor's center for a short introductory film, information and maps. Catch one of the historic re-enactments that occur during the day, and head to the many buildings that will help you further understand the importance and history of Williamsburg. Consider a visit to the Governor's Palace, which once housed the British governors of the colony. Other sites include the Capitol, the Randolph House and Kitchen, and the Museums of Colonial Williamsburg

    DAY 6, Thursday - Full Day in Williamsburg
    Enjoy a full day to explore this historical area. Further explore the activities and sights in Williamsburg, or venture to the Williamsburg Winery to experience how European-style wine was traditionally made. Perhaps spend a day at Busch Gardens, a local theme park. Or, choose to complete the “Historic Triangle” with a visit to Historic Jamestown, only 10 miles away, and nearby Yorktown to learn more about colonial times, the Civil War, and America's beginnings

    DAY 7, Friday - Drive to Washington DC
    Depart Williamsburg for the nation's capital – Washington DC. Sights and activities abound in this city, so be sure to plan your days wisely. Make a reservation to visit the White House, where 43 of the nation's presidents have resided. Be sure to visit the National Mall as well, where you will find many monuments, landmarks and museums, including the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Reflecting Pool and the United States Capitol. Don't miss the Smithsonian museums – you will find eleven of them in the National Mall alone. Entry to the Smithsonian museums is free and open to the public

    Overnight: Washington DC

    DAY 8, Saturday - Full Day in Washington DC
    Spend a full day in the nation's capital. Revisit the National Mall for any sights you might have missed, such as the Vietnam, Korean, and World War II Veterans Memorials. Or choose to venture outside this national park to other sights in the city, such as the Tidal Basin, where Japanese cherry blossom trees can be seen. With so much to offer, finish your last day in Washington DC visiting sights that are the most interesting and relevant to you

    DAY 9, Sunday - Return to Philadelphia
    Depart Washington DC and return to Philadelphia. Spend the remainder of your day at leisure in the “City of Brotherly Love.” Grab lunch at the Reading Terminal Market, which houses many food vendors, offering all types of food fare from comfort food to baked goods to ethnic variety. You may choose to explore one of the many museums in Philadelphia, such as the Museum of Art with the famed Rocky steps leading to the entrance, or the Please Touch Museum. Visit the John Johnson House museum and learn about the role it played in the Underground Railroad. Head to Fairmount Park to visit the many museum mansions that homed various historic political figures. This evening, you may choose to visit Rittenhouse Square for a glitzy experience of restaurants, art, culture and desserts

    DAY 10, Monday - Return Home
