Step into the past and enjoy the comforts of the present on this charming vacation. Begin your trip in Washington DC, where you will pick up your rental car. Spend the day exploring the nation's capital. Visit the National Mall and its many monuments and museums, including the Washington Monument and the Smithsonian museums. From Washington, head south to Willimasburg. En route, consider stopping at the Civil War battle sites of Fredricksburg and Chancellorsville, the place best known for the untimely death of General Stonewall Jackson.

In Colonial Williamsburg, you can stop by the Visitor's Center and see a historic re-enactment to learn about life in colonial America. You can spend a day at the nearby Bush Gardens theme park, or complete the “Historic Triangle” with visits to historic Jamestown and Yorktown. From Williamsburg, head north for Shenandoah. Marvel at the scenic views and panoramic overlooks as you travel Skyline Drive, the main road through the national park. Stop at a visitor center and take a trail hike through the park. From Shenandoah, return to Washington DC and take in a few more of the sights, such as the Vietnam Memorial and the National Zoo.     SAMPLE ITINERARY
    The following are suggested sites that can be visited en route to your hotel.

    DAY 1, Sunday - Arrive in Washington DC
    Arrive in Washington DC and proceed to the Alamo Rental Car Center to pick up your rental car. Enjoy the remainder of your day in the nation's capital. Sights and activities abound in this city, so be sure to plan your days wisely. Make a reservation to visit the White House where 43 of the nation's presidents have resided. Be sure to visit the National Mall as well, where you will find many monuments, landmarks and museums, including the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Reflecting Pool and the United States Capitol. Don't miss the Smithsonian museums – you will find eleven of them in the National Mall alone. Entry to the Smithsonian museums is free and open to the public
    Overnight: Washington DC

    DAY 2, Monday - Depart for Williamsburg
    Today, depart Washington DC and drive to Williamsburg. Upon arrival in Colonial Williamsburg, be sure to stop by the visitor's center for a short introductory film, information and maps. Catch one of the historic re-enactments that occur during the day, and head to the many buildings that will help you further understand the importance and history of Williamsburg. Consider a visit to the Governor's Palace, which once housed the British governors of the colony. Other sites include the Capitol, the Randolph House and Kitchen, and the Museums of Colonial Williamsburg

    DAY 3, Tuesday - Full Day in Williamsburg
    Today, enjoy a full day to explore this historical area. Further explore the activities and sights in Williamsburg, or venture to the Williamsburg Winery to experience how European-style wine was traditionally made. Perhaps spend a day at Busch Gardens, a local theme park. Or, choose to complete the “Historic Triangle” with a visit to Historic Jamestown, only 10 miles away, and nearby Yorktown to learn more about colonial times, the Civil War, and America's beginnings

    DAY 4, Wednesday - Drive to Shenandoah
    Today, depart for Shenandoah. Traverse Skyline Drive, the main road running through the bulk of the park. It has been designated a National Scenic Byway and spans over 105 miles. Many points of interest are marked with mileposts, including the 75 overlooks that provide beautiful panoramic views of the scenery. Be sure to stop at one of the visitor centers for information, trail guides, maps and other materials to help you further enjoy your visit to Shenandoah. Take a break from driving and head over to the 500 miles of hiking trails in the park to take in the beauty of nature by foot. You may choose to take a self-guided trail hike, or book a ranger-led trail hike. There are many trails to choose from

    Overnight: Shenandoah

    DAY 5, Thursday - Return to Washington DC
    Depart the Shenandoah Valley and return to Washington DC. Upon arrival, spend the remainder of your day at leisure. Revisit the National Mall for any sights you might have missed, such as the Vietnam, Korean, and World War II Veterans Memorials. Or choose to venture outside this national park to other sights in the city, such as the Tidal Basin, where Japanese cherry blossom trees can be seen. With so much to offer, finish your last day in Washington DC visiting sights that are the most interesting and relevant to you

    DAY 6, Friday - Return Home
