DAY 4, Tuesday - Newport, Rhode Island and the Connecticut River Valley
Continuing on to “the Ocean State”, get a glimpse of Gilded Age opulence in Newport, Rhode Island. The summer getaway for the rich and famous at the turn of the 19th Century, families such as the Vanderbilts and the Astors built their palatial “cottages” here. You will have the opportunity to tour the Vanderbilt estate known as The Breakers, now a National Historic Landmark. Built between 1893 and 1895, the 70 room mansion was built in the style of the Italian Renaissance palazzo by a team of over 2,000 craftsmen and artisans. The music room, inspired by the Paris Opera among other Parisian buildings, was built entirely in Paris, dismantled, and shipped to Newport to be installed

DAY 5, Wednesday - Berkshires and the Green Mountains
Today, continue on to the picturesque Massachusetts' region of the Berkshires. In Pittsfield, visit the Hancock Shaker Village and learn about the unique simplistic community that dwelt here. The Shakers numbered in the thousands in 19th century America, but today only a handful of followers remain. See how the community sustained itself through farming and craftwork. From here the tour heads north through the scenic small villages of southern Vermont. Along the way you will have the chance to visit the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site and sample some local Vermont cheese. DAY 7, Friday - Cannon Mountain and Portland

Authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Daniel Webster immortalized the Old Man of the Mountain, a rock formation resembling a face in profile, that once graced the side of the mountains. Sadly, the Old Man collapsed in 2003, almost 200 years after being discovered. While in the park you will board an aerial tram that will take you to the summit of Cannon Mountain. At 4,180 feet, the summit offers gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape. Your tour continues with a winding drive through the scenery of the White Mountains and Western Lakes region of Maine en route to Portland

Head south for a visit to Kennebunkport, known for its beautiful beaches, and Portsmouth, one of the oldest cities in the nation with an extensive Naval history. You will be treated to a regional specialty for lunch, the iconic New England Clambake. Continuing south you will have the opportunity to stop at Cape Neddick's Lighthouse and admire this picturesque example of the solitary towers that dot the country's coastline. Next, stop in the historic town of Salem, made famous by the 17th century witch trials held here, but with much more to offer, including the House of Seven Gables described by Nathaniel Hawthorne in the novel of the same name.
