This active program covers a good amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking on some touring days. The pace is moderate, however, you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. The Great Wall requires a climb of approximately 300 steps, some of which have an incline. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes, and people who have knee problems may want to carry a walking stick. Some tours require walking in the open air with no shade. Air pollution is a problem in many of China's major cities. Please see the CDC website and/or consult with your healthcare provider for specific recommendations. The usage of a bandanna or, light scarf might help screen out some of the pollutants in the air. This is a Partially Escorted program. For more information, click here.

It was really special and I enjoyed every minute of it. The sights and sounds were so interesting and the accommodations and meals were fantastic. Our guide did a wonderful job in helping us understand and appreciate Japanese culture.
Philip M. New York, NY
My trip to Japan was awe inspiring! Our tour guide Yumi did an outstanding job informing us about everything we saw. She truly deserves an award for her thorough knowledge of her country. I have a deeper appreciation for Japan and its preservation of their temples and shrines, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Great trip, Thank you.

I had a wonderful trip, I had a great time. Japan is a beautiful country. Mariko was an excellent tour manager. My husband enjoyed his ride on the bullet train. Hiroshima museum was very touching experience. Looking forward to going on another trip with Gate!

My trip was wonderful, Shizu made it perfect for us all, she was a fantastic guide incredibly well informed, organized with a lovely warm personality & sense of humor. She went out of her way to take some of us out for a walk around the night spots in Tokyo on our last night. A lovely city! The accommodations were excellent as were the included meals. Such fun dining dressed in the Yukata! I loved all the gardens, the bamboo forest, visits to the fish markets, interesting shops with different merchandise the WADA Village, actually seeing Mt Fuji & the museum with the kimonos, all the temples & shrines. The rickshaw ride, sushi making lunch were all great fun. The group were lovely, no one ran late and good relationships were formed. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to take advantage of the single supplement & hope to be able to do so again on future Discovery tours. David in the a Melbourne office was very helpful too, all in all my very first experience on a group tour had been fabulous as had Gate 1.

We had a wonderful trip in Japan. Our trip leader Makiko was sooo awesome. She was very well organized and filled with knowledge. We enjoyed every aspect of the trip all because of Makiko’s professionalism and organizational skills. The program covered so many aspects of Japan cultures and history provided us with wealth of information!

Tracey and I had a wonderful trip, we're so glad we went to China, such a fascinating country. From beginning to end logistics was made effortless by our wonderful tour guide Frank! Didn’t have to think about handling of any luggage throughout, everything was all taken care of as well as boarding passes for each internal flight. Fantastic. This was our 2nd trip with Gate 1 and would definitely consider another- price point- value for money- excellent.

We had a wonderful time. Our tour manager Rumi was the best. She is very knowledgeable and she gave us lots of information about Japanese culture and traditions. Took care of everyone’s needs. Rumi has a delightful personality. Overall it was a great trip. I am glad we chose Gate 1. Japan is a great place to visit.

The trip was wonderful, we loved it from the culture to the Japanese people. We took two of our daughters and my niece and nephew along with us and we had a really good family trip together. Thank you Gate 1 for organizing it! This was our 3rd time with Gate 1. We will go with them in the future and I always recommend all of our friends to go with Gate 1. Thanks again Gate 1.

The most wonderful “WOW” experience of my life. The China trip exceeded beyond our expectations. Our tour manager, Jason, other tour guides especially Jenny. Our drivers, hotel, restaurant and cruise staff were all excellent. They made our stay very special that I felt sad saying goodbye to them. From the historical places, the pandas, the flowers, the lights, food, music, cultural presentation, people’s interaction in the park...doing Tae Chi, singing, dancing etc. all these indeed were the total China experience that satisfy the basic human senses: sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. Jason indeed made this trip personalized, we were all touched when he and Cristina played the music in the bus on our last night at Shanghai “Leaving on a jet plane” and we all sung. I am so glad I was with this group!!! I have to commend all the people who coordinated this trip. Gate 1 Travel indeed is so fortunate to have Jason as their China’s tour manager, he does not only do his job he goes beyond what is expected of him in taking care of us and how he values his job with Gate 1!!! I have been sharing stories and experiences with my family, office mates and friends inspiring them to travel with Gate 1!!! Keep up the good work!! MORE OF THE WORLD FOR LESS!!!

The trip to Japan was great. We enjoyed the experiences (kimono dressing, rickshaw ride, traditional Japanese inn, public baths, etc.) that were part of the Discovery tour.

I would describe our trip with one word PHENOMENAL. Our tour guide Johny went above and beyond in taking care of us with whatever was needed to keep us safe ... And all kinds of other little things. He also was very informative about the old empires of China and the new China. We couldn’t have wished for any better. From the beginning of the tour to the end where he took us to the airport to ensure our take off went well. The boat cruise up the Yangtze River was fantastic, I enjoyed myself so much. The sight of the mountain range up the shore line was breathtaking. And then the excursions were fantastic. Well I could go on and on, but to make it short I had one of the times of my life, and trying to figure out where I’m going to go for my next vacation. Don’t know yet. Only one thing is sure it will be with Gate 1.
Gerda S. Toms River, NJ
The trip was great! Frank, our main guide was above and beyond- can’t even describe how he was knowledgeable but also able to keep the group happy. The other guides: ivy, Scotty , Steven were also superb plus excellent drivers. Great hotels and perfect food. It was over the top. I would recommend this trip highly, but be ready for whirlwind time. But it really was Frank that made this trip fabulous. Can not say enough about him!!!
Beverly D. Sag Harbor, NY
It was a great trip! Our guide Akena was exceptional. She made it awesome. Hiroshima was the highlight for me. Very sobering. Another fine job Gate 1!
Stephen R. Mogadore, OH
The trip was great! This was our first visit to Japan and we enjoyed seeing all the sights in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara. Our tour director, Akane, was also wonderful! She was able to keep everyone on schedule while remaining bubbly and funny. She is very knowledgeable about the customs and history and added greatly to our understanding and enjoyment of the sites. She also pointed out several good restaurants and that was very helpful ... One of the main attractions in our tours with Gate 1 are the wonderful buffet breakfasts in the hotels. That always puts a highlight at the beginning of the day!

Japan was wonderful! I had minimal expectations going in, but the trip was probably my best ever! On top of all the fantastic sights and experiences, our tour guide Rumi was SUPERB! She was so warm, funny, friendly, and never boring. And she took such excellent care of us and led us to so many hidden gems. During our bus rides, she even shared with us her wonderful personal photos. Rumi definitely made this experience one I will always treasure.

My trip was the greatest I have ever been on. I had so much fun and I wish I didn’t have to come back. I LOVE your travel company. You guys make traveling so affordable and the accommodations we get for the prices we pay are phenomenal. Plus, you guys are so helpful with any questions and concerns we might have as a customer. I'm definitely booking another trip with you guys and I informed all my coworkers about your company. I have no complaints or regrets. I'm very happy that I booked with Gate 1.
Stacey C. Jamaica, NY
It was excellent! The whole experience far surpassed our expectations. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly and took great care to make sure that everyone had a great time. He also had a lot of patience with the different personalities on the trip. We came away with a greater knowledge of China and its people. Six of us traveled together, we all will recommend this trip to friends and family, especially with our guide Jason.
Mary T. Collegeville, PA
The trip was excellent ... Our guide, Hiroko, was fantastic - knowledgeable, caring, and funny - with many tips, tricks and stories to help us appreciate the Japanese country and culture.
Jonathan K. Plainsboro, NJ
Really interesting and eye opening. I found some of the preconceived notions I had about China were baseless and there were other things I had no idea about. I feel like I have a deeper understanding about life there, what they pride themselves in, and how they’re collectively working towards the future. Our tour manager Jason Yin was fantastic and did an amazing job at accommodating to individual needs and being as inclusive as possible. I look forward to doing it again in a few years to see how much has changed city-wise and culturally.
Mark V. Concord, NC
It was awesome. This was my first tour with Gate1. I was not disappointed. It was well planned, there were variety of things to do, places to visit. Our dietary need as a vegetarian was taken care of! I loved the tour guide, Yumi. She was great.
Abirami K. Cupertino, CA
This was our first trip with Gate1 and to China ... Getting a taste of China was a real eye opener for us and your company's service made it a very enjoyable experiance. Our main tour guide Ivy was fantastic and we really enjoyed Tom in Shanghai at the end ... Gate1 appears to have a very good service oriented corporate culture and employees we've interacted with appear to like working for your company. We thought the trip was a great value and will definitely look to Gate1 for our next tour. Keep up the good work.
David V. White Lake, MI
Our Japan trip was excellent & very enjoyable. Tokyo & Kyoto hotels were very centrally located, convenient and excellent. I will give them A+. Our tour guide/ Manager Mr. katsumi was the best ... Wish we had manager like Mr. katsumi on all our tour. Very down to earth person.
Jash P. Indianapolis, IN
We had a wonderful time. I just wanted to commend our guide, Jason Yin, for his excellent management of our tour. He is very knowledgeable and friendly and he took excellent care of all our needs. But more than that, he is very creative and went beyond what is required of a tour manager by creating additional activities and providing information that allowed our group to better understand and appreciate the people and culture of China. He is a natural at this business and you should never let him get away.
Stephen S. Midwest City, OK
My trip to China with Gate1 was spectacular in every respect, especially because of our tour manager, Maggie Zhu. I have spoken to my fellow travelers on the trip, most of whom are very experienced travelers, and some of whom I feel will be lifelong friends...they unanimously agree that thanks to Maggie Zhu this was truly the trip of a lifetime. China is of course an incredible country to explore, but Maggie Zhu's people skills are phenomenal - she was always thorough, clear, patient, detailed, understanding, resourceful, meticulous, reliable, dependable, proactive, helpful and funny, and she possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of China, its rich history, people, traditions, culture, economy, society, customs, norms and values that she readily shared with us in spectacular English with great aplomb, humor, and clarity. Based on this trip I will definitely be further exploring the world and traveling with Gate 1 in the future.
Michael L. Berkeley, CA
It was the best!! From tour guide Rose, local guides, drivers, hotels, meals and airline business class. We will be using gate 1 again.
Gail K. Torrance, CA
Great! Japan is very clean. I like Kyota best. Tokyo is a so big that it would be very scary if you got separated from your guide. Very interesting country
Fay S. Pittsburgh, PA
The Japan tour was great! Our tour guide Mitsuko was very nice, friendly and knowledgeable. The hotels were great as well. We are now discussing of where Gate1 will take us next.
Nina M. Los Angeles, CA
Our trip was amazing! Melinda, our guide, was the best guide ever. She really needs to be promoted and recognized for her efforts and her professional, positive leadership. She really works hard to ensure the group has the best experiences, take care of her! She's very organized and knowledgeable about the history, culture, region, finds fun things to do, and keeps the group moving to get the most out of the time left in the day. Highly recommend her, very gracious person. George did a good job too, very interesting person and can tell he too loves his career. We loved Gate 1 and so does she. You all did a great job.
Pamela M. Seattle, WA
The Discovery Japan tour is one of our top three favorite trips from Gate 1. The enriching cultural history, the food, the Japanese Garden, the unforgettable view of Mt. Fuji, the Cherry blossom festival ,the kimono dressing, the unforgettable bullet train experience and the geisha dance performance. Overall, A wonderful wonder wow vacation.
Josie F. Laguna Niguel, CA
I am still telling everyone about how VAST China is: cleanliness, airports, underground, rail stations, countryside, Terracotta Warriors, the cities, the Bund, the Dam, the Gorges....and yet all so approachable with our excellent tour guide and the others who joined us along the way. It was a wonderful experience!
Julie S. Reno, NV
I really enjoyed myself. Susan was great as a tour guide. She went above and beyond to help me out in a situation that came up.The trip to China was awesome! I already recommended several of my friends to check Gate 1 out. I’ll be taking another trip soon! Thanks for reaching out.

I just completed the online survey, but want to say more about our tour guide, Rosie. She was fantastic in every way. She made the value of this trip even greater by sharing her knowledge of local places to eat and shop.e m Shade sure each of our meals was more than delightful. Any question was answered in a friendly and competent way. It was like being in a family with our mother Rose to show us the way. She took a personal degree of attention to every aspect of the trip. Nothing we asked was beyond her. Amazing! I can not say enough good things about her. China is an amazing place, and the quality of Gateone showed through in every aspect. There we nice touches, like taking care of our luggage, and other little extras. Not only would we do another trip with Gateone, but would ONLY do trips with you in the future. Why go anywhere else when everything is taken care of so well.
