Enjoy a visit to what has often been described as the "eighth wonder of the world." El Escorial is, perhaps, Philip II's most enduring legacy to Spain. This combination monastery-palace-mausoleum is situated approximately one hour outside of Madrid in the foothills of the Guadarrama Mountains. This austere monastery, erected by King Philip II in 1584, was intended to be a memorial to his father, King Charles V, and to commemorate Spain´s victory at Saint Quentin in 1557. It has since become the burial place of subsequent Spanish kings and queens. You will have free time to visit the site Gardens and surrounding area. Continue with a short drive to the Valley of the Fallen, a monumental complex, located in Sierra de Guadarrama. Visit the underground basilica, built into the mountain, that is topped with the world's largest cross, which can be seen from miles away.

Visit Toledo, the former capital city of Spain that still retains its medieval atmosphere and charm, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Begin with a walking tour among the most famous monuments, visiting the St. Tome Church with its El Greco masterpiece and Santa Maria la Blanca Synagogue with its beautiful Moorish architecture, the oldest synagogue in Europe still standing. Stroll amid the courtyard cloisters and royal coats of arms at the San Juan de los Reyes Monastery. Conclude the tour with views of the Cathedral of Toledo. Then, you will have free time to explore Toledo on your own before returning to Madrid.

Head to Avila and take a guided walking tour of the Old Town to discover the impressive history of the city. See Romanesque style churches, Gothic palaces, and a fortified cathedral dating back to the the Middle Ages. Visit the well-preserved walls of Ávila hear of the events that they have witnessed throughout the centuries. Marvel at the fortification and towers, which have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. After the tour, enjoy some free time to explore the other areas of the town. Then, continue to Segovia. Following lunch, walk through the old Jewish quarter of the city, and visit the Alcazar of Segovia. Marvel at the spectacular architecture of this epic medieval castle.

It was fab!!! The food, wine, culture, architecture, the people - all wonderful. Loved that pretty much everywhere they accepted CCs, so there’s minimal need for currency. We visited 3 cities - Porto, Lisbon & Sintra. All wonderful with their own scene. Thank you for setting us up with such a great trip Gate 1!

Our unguided (no tour manager) trip to Barcelona was wonderful! My wife and I both had some trepidation before going. We had not traveled without a guided format in decades; that forced us to do our homework and plan out our days. We were able to spend more time at the sites that most interested us. The trip was amazing value. Truly, we can't figure out the math to understand how you can offer such a trip for that cost. The hotel was very nice, in an excellent location and we all had a wonderful time. We will be on Gate 1 again in May and have converted our friends as well.
