Is This Trip Right for You?

This very active trip covers a lot of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. The pace is active and you will encounter some uneven surfaces such as sandy and rocky beaches, stairs, steps and significant slopes. In the Galapagos, it takes approximately two hours, on foot, to get to and from the areas populated with wildlife. You will experience wet landings in water, on sand or rocks and dry landings on wooden docks. Getting to the Galapagos requires a flight from Guayaquil to the Island of Baltra, where you will transfer to the Baltra Seaport and travel by boat to Santa Cruz Island. A bus ride will take you to Puerto Ayora and then a panga ride to your hotel. The weather in Galapagos is hot particularly December through June. This tour visits areas of high elevations in Quito (9,300 feet) and may be a consideration for those who have heart conditions or are otherwise affected by height. If you have any concerns about traveling to higher than your accustomed elevation, please consult your healthcare provider. Early wake-ups are necessary on some mornings to cover the territory. This tour is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking. This is an independent program and does not include the services of a tour manager. For more information, click here.

This small island is abundant with fascinating wildlife at the seaside and along the cliffs including sea lions, land iguanas, and swallow-tailed gulls, along with many species of cacti and vegetation that changes colors according to the season. See the spectacular panorama as you land in the channel. The turquoise waters contrast brilliantly with the white sand and black lava of the shoreline. The rocks are thick with green seaweed, speckled with bright orange Sally lightfoot crabs. Further up the shore, a carpet of scarlet succulents serves as a ground cover for a grove of luminescent green prickly pear cactus with land iguanas sitting beneath, waiting patiently for pears to drop. Follow the trail to the cliffs that overlook the ocean where swallow-tailed gulls nest and red-billed tropic birds, masked and blue-footed boobies ride the windy currents. Galapagos brown pelicans hover in the evergreen mangroves under the surveillance of blue-footed boobies perched along the cliffs. Under the sea, sea turtles graze on seaweed, while hundreds of reef fish swim about the lava crevices and young reef sharks and rays use the streams to hide from large predators. Next, tour Punta Estrada Island's small beach, a great place to see intertidal organisms and learn about marine iguanas in their nesting site. Return to Finch Bay for lunch, followed by a fascinating visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station's giant tortoise breeding center, situated within an impressive prickly pear cactus forest home. Look out for the large species of land iguana native to Santa Fe. These huge chocolate brown iguanas have dragon-like spines, and truly resemble dinosaurs. After the hike, an inviting swim in the crystal-clear calm waters of the bay with great snorkeling opportunities. My trip was amazing! Marco was such a great guide, along with the other local guides as well. I was a little nervous as this was my first solo trip but from the minute I went down to the hotel lobby and met Marco and the rest of the group I felt at ease. Traveling with Gate 1 was great and I felt safe the entire time. I would definitely book with Gate 1 again.

11 Day Ecuador, the Amazon & Peru with Machu Picchu, August 2019

It was amazing, wonderful, interesting, mind expanding, stimulating, awesome in the old sense of the word. I love Gate 1- you guys are the best! Oscar (our tour guide in Peru) was so knowledgeable, organized, patient, and his support, Joel was kind, sweet, forever looking to be of help. Javier, in Ecuador was warm and caretaking. I tell everyone I know to use gate 1. We went to Africa last year and I hope to go somewhere in Asia next year. We missed the hot springs in Ecuador due to mud slides and Gate one gave us an amazing buffet dinner and music show in Peru to make up for it because Gate 1 is like that- fair, responsive, etc. As a single Mother running my own practice I am always in charge- I love that with Gate 1 I can focus on the important things, what to wear, what to eat, what to buy, and what pictures to take and everything else is taken care of. I feel safe traveling with my 16 year old son. The hotels were wonderful: Sacred Valley and Le Casa del Suizo were my favorites. But all the hotels were good and the food was great. I like the excursions- My son LOVED the canopy adventure, and the all day excursions at Cuzco were great. The Amazon Jungle and Machu Picchu were beyond amazing- It’s hard to find enough positive words to describe what I felt about those experiences. Gate 1 gives me a sense of viability to travel anywhere! I am grateful for it and thank you very much for edifying and expanding my world and helping me “See more of the world for less.”

Our trip was great! My Granddaughter was active enough that she didn’t get bored and I think she learned a lot. The most impressive part of the trip was our guide Antonio. He was one of the best tour managers we have ever had. He was entertaining, knowledgeable, attentive to everyone’s needs, and loves his county.

The trip was great. I was very pleased with the hotels and the accommodations in Galapagos and the Amazon were better than adequate. The food was good and we had so many choices. The naturalists and guides were all excellent. They had such sharp eyes for seeing things in the jungle that we would have missed and they were very knowledgeable. Wilson, our tour director, was very good natured and funny. He seemed to know everything about the cities, the history, the architecture, the animals and plants, etc. I was glad when someone finally asked him a question he didn’t know the answer to! The bus drivers were great and I felt safe even on the narrow winding roads. We did everything that was listed in the brochure and pretty much everything happened like clockwork. I will definitely recommend Gate 1 travel to others.

It was beyond expectation and ran so smoothly it was scary. We kept waiting for a hiccup around the corner and it never happened! Our tour guide in Guayaquil was Fernando and he was great. This is our 3rd trip with Gate 1 and most assuredly is not our last. We have mentioned your company to dozens of people and will continue to do so.

Ohh man, where do I start? It was one of my most unforgettable trips ever. The accommodations are excellent, the staff treated us like real VIP's and their cuisine is very good as well. The outdoor activities were so much fun. In particular was the Canopy park, the obstacle courses that we have to go through. And our tour guide Carlos, he was very attentive to all our needs. He was very patient and he has a great sense of humor too. And our driver, Italo, he never gets tired. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10, I'll give it a 12. Thank you Gate 1 for a wonderful experience.

It was amazing! Everything I could have hoped for and more. Eduardo (our guide) was fantastic and incredibly knowledgeable. He made sure we were well taken care of while also being an absolute joy to be around. This was my third Gate 1 trip and my family's first. I was able to let them know with the utmost confidence that there wouldn't be any confusion trying to find the group or knowing where we are supposed to go. They understood as soon as we landed and they met Eduardo. Each day somehow topped the day before. All of the accommodations were wonderful and our guides in the Amazon were wonderful. Ecuador is so beautiful and I am very excited that I was able to go. Can't wait for the next one!!

Fantastic. Daniel was the best tour guide I have ever had. He made the trip exciting. Intelligent, witty, he understood American culture. His love of his country was refreshing. An amazing trip with the best guide. I call that a winner.

A fantastic journey to the Galapagos and Ecuador and the Amazon - feel very fortunate to be able to undertake such an adventure. Everything went extremely well - our guide Paul, was exceptional - a talented man with much patience to guide us along the 12 day journey. All accommodations and meals were fantastic - all the drivers, managers, and local guides were truly remarkable. Much was included in this very exciting trip - so glad to have been able to see and experience this amazing country. Enjoyed every moment! Looking forward to future experiences with Gate 1.

We had a marvelous time on our Galapagos trip The ship was very nice, and we saw so many animals. We loved the snorkeling and kayaking and all the hikes. We also enjoyed Guayaquil and Quito and both our city guides were excellent. We invited two couples who were first-time travelers with Gate1 to go with us, and you made us very proud! All 6 of us loved the trip!

I must say that it was truly marvelous. It exceeded all my expectations and was an amazing experience. The tour guide Jose Naranho, the hotels, the food everything was excellent . I am glad we chose Ecuador, a country with friendly people, Amazon, Rain forest, Cloud forest, Andes mountains and more. The hikes, the motorized canoe trip, the primitive raft experience, the Devil’s Nose train rider etc were wonderful. This is definitely one of the, if not the best trips of my life.

We got free drinks from Danny every night which was fantastic. Hotels and restaurants picked by Gate 1 were immaculate. Beautiful country...we had an awesome time ...THANK YOU Gate 1 for a unique experience. Once again a very special thanks to Wilson our guide...he is the BEST! He was knowledgeable and fun. As with all of our past Gate 1 trips, the Galapagos trip was fantastic. Great weather, great sights, etc. On a scale of 1 to 10 this trip was a 15! The 7 days on the Santa Cruz II were wonderful....food, service, multiple daily excursions to 10 islands, deep water snorkeling, hiking, etc. The interaction with the wildlife - and the photo opportunities - on the uninhabited islands is beyond description.

This is our first Gate1 tour. It was wonderful. I did the research before we went. The tour got a lot of compliments online and we are not disappointed. Our guide Daniel is phenomenal. He is absolutely wonderful. We are very happy with the tour and the service your company provided and can't wait to go back.

We had a fabulous trip, Galapagos is a wonderful place to visit and The Finch Bay Hotel is such a charming place with wonderful food. Love the hotel and also the yacht we used on one of the excursions, such an experience to have chefs cooking our lunch on the yacht. The guides and tour managers along the trip are all very nice and everything was arranged perfectly. The only thing is since we weren’t told whether we will have the same driver the next day or not, it’s hard for us to tip them and I think couple times we miss the tipping opportunities. I am planning on taking another trip with my kids to see the other islands of Galapagos and I have told all my friends about our wonderful trip with Gate 1. We have had 5 trips with Gate1 and looking forward to go on more adventures with your company in the future.

Trip to Ecuador was fabulous, surpassed all my expectations. I KNEW that the Galapagos would be great but I had few expectations for the remainder of the trip. Marcelo was our guide for the mainland--he was the best guide I've ever had on a Gate 1 Tour (or any other tour for that matter). The guides on the Galapagos were great too. Wonderful all the way around.
