This active program covers a good amount of ground each day. Expect from two to three hours walking on some touring days. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. A few early wake-ups, some at 5 or 6 AM, as well as one long 10-hour drive to Puno are necessary to cover the territory. Due to the high elevation, travel in the Ecuadorian Andes and the Peruvian highlands may cause some passengers to experience the temporary effects of altitude sickness. In Cuzco the altitude is 11,000 feet and in Puno 12,400 feet, this may be a consideration for those who have heart conditions or are otherwise affected by height. If you have any concerns about traveling to higher than your accustomed elevation, please consult your healthcare provider. Some hotels in Otavalo, Papallacta, Amazon, Baños, Patate, Urubamba, Cuzco and Puno are built in the traditional local style and have no air-conditioning. During heat waves, these hotels can become uncomfortable, even at higher elevations. This is a Classic program. For more information, click here.

Our trip was amazing! Our guide, Soham was brilliant! He was certainly a master of the Galapagos. The hotels were unique and we loved staying in downtown Santa Cruz, so we could walk everywhere. It was amazing how close we could get to the animals. Our photos are great because of that... and the tour kept us walking, which I need! Thanks for a great tour.
Mary V. Fishkill, NY
We just returned from our Ecuador trip and are very - very happy! Gate 1 is famous for attention to details, so we were confident while buying the package; however, this time the trip exceeded our expectations. All accommodations were very good: 1st night was Hilton ( known for top level of service), then each overnight place had unique character - jams in the middle of nowhere. The same as places for lunch and dinners: 400 years old haciendas with waiters in white shorts and black trousers, amazing local restaurants. Food was good and safe in terms of health and stomach problems known in some countries. Trip to Amazon overall blew our mind: tremendous nature, great resort, interesting indigenous people who shared with us knowledge of Amazon jungles and herbs, visit of chocolate farm run by indigenous family. The guide Paul showed us the best from Ecuador: knowledgeable, loving his country and providing many interesting details, with warm, kind personality and sense of humor. We consider Paul the best guide, as per our 4th trip with Gate 1 .
Inessa R. Burnaby, British Columbia
Ecuador is excellent. The food, tour manager (Paul), local guides (especially John) and sightseeing are all top notch. I would highly recommend Ecuador to my friends. In Peru, food is more expensive. But the tour manager and sightseeing were great.
David H. Ontario, Canada
It was a very very nice tour. The lodging provided was excellent, especially at the Royal Palms in the Galapagos islands. Daily excursions were very good and covered all the nature highlight of the islands. I will recommend this trip to all my friends.
Robert M. San Juan Capistrano, CA
Fabulous. Antonio was extremely impressive and effective as a tour guide. His knowledge was exceptional, he maintained harmony among the group and added to our experiences at all locations. Our driver, Roque was also excellent, extremely skilled, friendly and a welcome smile for all of us. A terrific trip with many adventures we never imagined. The best!
Betsy R. Lansing, MI
My Ecuador trip was awesome. It exceeds my expectation in every aspects. The tour manager Marcelo is the best tour guide I have ever had during my 60+ countries travel. He is very knowledgeable, fun person. Gate 1 did an extremely good job. I will definitely do more tours with Gate 1 in the future. I am recommending this Ecuador tour to all my friends and coworkers now!
Zaijin H. Boca Raton, FL
I just wanted to say that the trip to Ecuador was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken. The team of guides were expertly put together and truly made it an enriching experience. Everything was perfectly organized and paced. The locations we visited were beautiful with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. I was also very pleased with the extra attention to detail to ensure all of my meals were vegan. I am looking forward to joining Gate 1 again in the future and will definitely be recommending your tours to my friends!
Katherine N. Douglasville, GA
My trip was amazing! Marco was such a great guide, along with the other local guides as well. I was a little nervous as this was my first solo trip but from the minute I went down to the hotel lobby and met Marco and the rest of the group I felt at ease. Traveling with Gate 1 was great and I felt safe the entire time. I would definitely book with Gate 1 again.
Chelsey C. Sacramento, CA
It was amazing, wonderful, interesting, mind expanding, stimulating, awesome in the old sense of the word. I love Gate 1- you guys are the best! Oscar (our tour guide in Peru) was so knowledgeable, organized, patient, and his support, Joel was kind, sweet, forever looking to be of help. Javier, in Ecuador was warm and caretaking. I tell everyone I know to use gate 1. We went to Africa last year and I hope to go somewhere in Asia next year. We missed the hot springs in Ecuador due to mud slides and Gate one gave us an amazing buffet dinner and music show in Peru to make up for it because Gate 1 is like that- fair, responsive, etc. As a single Mother running my own practice I am always in charge- I love that with Gate 1 I can focus on the important things, what to wear, what to eat, what to buy, and what pictures to take and everything else is taken care of. I feel safe traveling with my 16 year old son. The hotels were wonderful: Sacred Valley and Le Casa del Suizo were my favorites. But all the hotels were good and the food was great. I like the excursions- My son LOVED the canopy adventure, and the all day excursions at Cuzco were great. The Amazon Jungle and Machu Picchu were beyond amazing- It’s hard to find enough positive words to describe what I felt about those experiences. Gate 1 gives me a sense of viability to travel anywhere! I am grateful for it and thank you very much for edifying and expanding my world and helping me “See more of the world for less.”

Our trip was great! My Granddaughter was active enough that she didn’t get bored and I think she learned a lot. The most impressive part of the trip was our guide Antonio. He was one of the best tour managers we have ever had. He was entertaining, knowledgeable, attentive to everyone’s needs, and loves his county.

We had a very enjoyable and adventurous trip with Gate 1 to Ecuador, Amazon and Peru. Everything was very well organized and done in a timely manner. The quality of the hotels and restaurants was outstanding. The tour managers Jose (Ecuador) and Arturo (Peru) were very kind, helpful and knowledgeable. We cannot wait to go on our next trip with Gate 1.

It was perfect. Ecuador is a beautiful country. Our tour manager, Daniel, ran the whole trip with precision. He is knowledgeable, nice, funny and accommodating. Our driver, Kelvin, is also very good. We enjoyed the hotels, the food and places we visited.

It was amazing. We can’t stop bragging about the Ecuador and Peru trip. Our tour guide in Ecuador, Jose, was fabulous/knowledgeable and passionate. He was tireless and helpful in everything. Our guide in Peru, Arturo, was wonderful too. He was so knowledgeable about Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley which made the tour meaningful. All the accommodations were top notch and meals were excellent. We plan on using Gate 1 again for future travels and highly recommend them to all.

Our trip was delightful! Loved every minute of it, Edwardo was a great host. He knew all of the places, and was very helpful and friendly. Loved that he kept us stocked in water ... The places we visited were awesome! We loved Galapagos and the Amazon and the trips inside those places. Also loved the Discovery tour. It was the right size and the hotels were great. We will definitely be taking more Gate 1 Discovery Tours ...

I had the trip of a lifetime. Loved it. Everything went smoothly. Our guide, Marcelo was wonderful. A real asset to your company. Very easy going manner, handled situations with ease and took care of us safely. His pride of Ecuador was wonderful, he told us many things about his country and has a lot of information on it's history.

Spectacular. We had a group of 14 and had a blast. All the details that were outlined were executed to perfection. Gabriella our a guide was a bundle of energy and was so much fun. We felt like we were on a National Geographic photo shoot. We look forward to our next Gate 1 tour.

The trip was great. I was very pleased with the hotels and the accommodations in Galapagos and the Amazon were better than adequate. The food was good and we had so many choices. The naturalists and guides were all excellent. They had such sharp eyes for seeing things in the jungle that we would have missed and they were very knowledgeable. Wilson, our tour director, was very good natured and funny. He seemed to know everything about the cities, the history, the architecture, the animals and plants, etc. I was glad when someone finally asked him a question he didn’t know the answer to! The bus drivers were great and I felt safe even on the narrow winding roads. We did everything that was listed in the brochure and pretty much everything happened like clockwork. I will definitely recommend Gate 1 travel to others.

We had an amazing time. The Galapagos were extraordinary and our nature guides (Valentin and Jose) were terrific. Ecuador was also wonderful and again we had an amazing guide. Santiago took very good care of us ... We look forward to another Gate 1 adventure in the future.

The trip was wonderful. Gate 1 has done it again - provided a great tour, just the right amount of activities, wonderful and varied accommodations, and a superb guide - all for a reasonable price. Antonio, the guide, was wonderful - knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and had a nice sense of humor. Kudos all around!

It was beyond expectation and ran so smoothly it was scary. We kept waiting for a hiccup around the corner and it never happened! Our tour guide in Guayaquil was Fernando and he was great. Our Naturalist on board the Santa Cruz II was Sebastian and he was fantastic beyond belief. Our tour guide in Quito was extra special. Everyone met us at the appointed time. This is our 3rd trip with Gate 1 and most assuredly is not our last. We have mentioned your company to dozens of people and will continue to do so.
Bob D. Marco Island, FL
It was fantastic! From the iguanas in Galápagos to the monkeys in the jungle, from the volcanoes to the coast, it was all so awesome! Our guide, Antonio, was the best and went beyond his duty to make everything perfect! He made the trip even better. What a wonderful adventure this was!

It was a great trip. We saw and experienced so much. Our tour manager, Javier, is the best. He was extremely well organized, knowledgeable, super friendly, calm and level headed ... And our bus driver, Israel, was the best. He’s obviously well versed in the terrain and geography of Ecuador. They are a great team.

Ohh man, where do I start? It was one of my most unforgettable trips ever. The accommodations are excellent, the staff treated us like real VIP's and their cuisine is very good as well. The outdoor activities were so much fun. In particular was the Canopy park, the obstacle courses that we have to go through. And our tour guide Carlos, he was very attentive to all our needs. He was very patient and he has a great sense of humor too. And our driver, Italo, he never gets tired. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10, I'll give it a 12. Thank you Gate 1 for a wonderful experience.
Racquel B. Vallejo, CA
I had a lovely experience. I was originally looking for something a little more ‘energetic’, but was quick to embrace the thoughtful, relaxed, educational and enthusiastic pace of our ‘senior’ group. Our guide, Marcelo, was amazing. Very knowledgeable and an awesome ambassador for Ecuador's culture and people.
Christian B. Henderson, NV
We loved Ecuador and the hotels that were booked. Great guide (Leonardo) and driver (Italo). Leo even helped us the day after our trip was over and was very much appreciated since we have limited Spanish. We can't say enough good things about our rooms each night, as all were different but each was very nice, clean, the staff was nice, etc.
Holly M. Tamarac, FL
Our trip was amazing. Our guide Giovanna was so professional, knowledgeable, polite and willing to help in any way she could. We fell in love with Ecuador. It was perfectly planned. The best trip we ever had.
Dina K. Brooklyn, NY
It was amazing! Everything I could have hoped for and more. Eduardo (our guide) was fantastic and incredibly knowledgeable. He made sure we were well taken care of while also being an absolute joy to be around. This was my third Gate 1 trip and my family's first. I was able to let them know with the utmost confidence that there wouldn't be any confusion trying to find the group or knowing where we are supposed to go. They understood as soon as we landed and they met Eduardo. Each day somehow topped the day before. All of the accommodations were wonderful and our guides in the Amazon were wonderful. Ecuador is so beautiful and I am very excited that I was able to go. Can't wait for the next one!!

A fantastic journey to the Galapagos and Ecuador and the Amazon - feel very fortunate to be able to undertake such an adventure. Everything went extremely well - our guide Paul, was exceptional - a talented man with much patience to guide us along the 12 day journey. All accommodations and meals were fantastic - all the drivers, managers, and local guides were truly remarkable. Much was included in this very exciting trip - so glad to have been able to see and experience this amazing country. Enjoyed every moment! Looking forward to future experiences with Gate 1.

We had a marvelous time on our Galapagos trip The ship was very nice, and we saw so many animals. We loved the snorkeling and kayaking and all the hikes. We also enjoyed Guayaquil and Quito and both our city guides were excellent. We invited two couples who were first-time travelers with Gate1 to go with us, and you made us very proud! All 6 of us loved the trip!

I must say that it was truly marvelous. It exceeded all my expectations and was an amazing experience. The tour guide Jose Naranho, the hotels, the food everything was excellent . I am glad we chose Ecuador, a country with friendly people, Amazon, Rain forest, Cloud forest, Andes mountains and more. The hikes, the motorized canoe trip, the primitive raft experience, the Devil’s Nose train rider etc were wonderful. This is definitely one of the, if not the best trips of my life.

As with all of our past Gate 1 trips, the Galapagos trip was fantastic. Great weather, great sights, etc. On a scale of 1 to 10 this trip was a 15! The 7 days on the Santa Cruz II were wonderful....food, service, multiple daily excursions to 10 islands, deep water snorkeling, hiking, etc. The interaction with the wildlife - and the photo opportunities - on the uninhabited islands is beyond description.
