Is This Trip Right for You?
This active program covers a good amount of ground each day. Expect from two to three hours walking on some touring days. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. When visiting Machu Picchu, please be aware that walking sticks are not allowed in some areas of the archaeological site and must be carried in a backpack. Prescriptions are required for walking sticks to be allowed at the Machu Picchu archaeological site and must be rubbed tipped. Also selfie sticks are forbidden and only folding umbrellas are allowed. A few early wake-ups, some at 5 or 6 AM, as well as one long 10-hour drive to Puno are necessary to cover the territory. The altitude, 11,000 feet in Cuzco and 12,400 feet in Puno, may be a consideration for those who have heart conditions or are otherwise affected by height. We suggest you check with your health-care provider before signing up for this tour. Some hotels in Puno are built in the traditional local style and have no air-conditioning. During heat waves, these hotels can become uncomfortable, even at higher elevations. This is a Classic program. For more information, click here.
This 11 day "on-the-go" program features the highlights of Peru in an active itinerary which includes several walking tours as well as some early starts and long days.
▲ Due to the high elevation, travel in the Peruvian highlands may cause some passengers to experience the temporary effects of altitude sickness. If you have any concerns about traveling to higher than your accustomed elevation, please consult your healthcare provider.
Gate 1 Travel itineraries may contain suggestions for activities for your leisure time; these suggestions do not constitute a recommendation nor an endorsement of any specific service provider and the decision to participate in any such activities should be made independently.

Know Before You Go
Although most of the planning and preparation is taken care of for you, there are still a few things you should know and some details you should take care of to ensure your comfort, safety and peace of mind. Please review the following information before your departure to ensure that any surprises along the way will only be pleasant ones.
Getting Ready to Go
Passports and Visas
|It is each traveler's responsibility to have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the dates of travel and a visa if required. Please check the information at www.gate1travel.com/visas.aspx for the specific country/region you are visiting for more details. IMPORTANT: Passengers who are not U.S. citizens must check with the respective consulate or a visa agency to determine what personal identification is required. Passengers who enter, leave and then re-enter the same country on their itinerary should check if they require a double-entry visa. Passport applications are available at most U.S. Post Offices, as well as at regional Passport Agencies. Passengers requiring visas, whether obtained in advance or locally upon arrival, should ensure that their passport has blank pages.
Peru - Passport information must be submitted to Gate 1 Travel at least 60 days prior to departure. This information is necessary to issue Machu Picchu train tickets.
About Your Train to Machu Picchu
Tickets for Machu Picchu will be provided locally. On the day of your visit to Machu Picchu, you will depart by motor coach to the Ollantaytambo station. Your Tour Manager will check that you are carrying your passport which is required to board all Machu Picchu trains. Prior to arrival at the station, you will receive your round trip tickets including seat assignments from your Tour Manager. Passport names and numbers on the tickets must match your passport. You will present your ticket to the conductor prior to boarding the train for Aguas Calientes. You should hold on to your ticket as it will be required for the return journey. Due to very limited storage space, only one small backpack / daypack / handbag per passenger is permitted onboard trains to Machu Picchu. This applies for overnight stays as well. Additional luggage will be transported to and held at your next hotel for no additional charge. Passengers who wish to bring extra luggage on the train will be charged an additional fee payable directly to the train operator; this extra luggage might follow in a separate train car.
Traveling with Friends or Family?
If you are traveling with friends or family who are booked on another reservation, please make sure that we are aware. On occasion, we may operate more than one vehicle on your tour departure in which case we will ensure that guests will be assigned together. This is achieved by connecting your reservations before your departure. Once you arrive in your destination, it may not be possible to make assignment changes. To check that your reservations are linked, log into https://www.gate1travel.com/res with your email and password, select your reservation number, and check to see that your reservations are indicated as "Traveling With" at the top right side of the display.
A little pre-planning can make your trip go a lot smoother. Several weeks before your trip, make a list of what you will need to take with you. Make sure your personal documents (passports, visas, driver's license) are in order. Make sure also that you have enough prescription medications to last through the trip and carry them with you in case your luggage is delayed. Bring a change of clothes in your carry-on bag in the event that your luggage is delayed or lost. Lost luggage is common. We strongly urge you to consider carry-ons instead of checked bags when possible, and when checking a bag is necessary, choose a bag color and identification that stands out. We suggest that you make photocopies of passports, visas, personal ID and any other important travel documents and pack them separately from the originals. You may also make a digital copy of your passport to keep a clear picture with the important details in your cell phone or digital camera photos. If you lose the originals while traveling, you'll have copies for easier reporting and replacement. Pack a list of medications including dosage and generic names. You may consider bringing a small supply of over the counter medications for headaches and/or anti-diarrhea pills (especially when traveling outside of the USA and Western Europe). We recommend that you pack a portable alarm clock. Due to security reasons, many museums have restrictions on the size of bags that can be taken inside and backpacks, carry-on bags or large purses may not be permitted. It is recommended to bring a small shoulder bag or purse to use in these situations instead. Avoid placing valuables such as cameras in your checked luggage. Airplane pressure can cause similar pressure in your body, most notably in ears, as well as liquid tubes and bottles. Your physician can suggest medication for decongestion. We suggest that you place liquid containers into Ziploc bags to catch any leaks.
Travel Safety Advice: The safety of our guests is Gate 1’s #1 concern. Before making the decision to reserve your vacation, we want you to be aware of potential situations which may impact your holiday. While most of the time our programs run precisely according to plans, on rare occasion force majeure events including weather, transportation mechanical issues, or uninhabitable accommodation, civil unrest and even criminal or terrorist activities will present themselves unexpectedly and with little or no notice. Gate 1 will make the decision to cancel a tour only after receiving verifiable government issued information. We are otherwise obliged to comply with contractual airline and vendor agreements and carry out the tour until or unless we are advised otherwise. In the event of such an occurrence anytime after your date of departure, Gate 1 and the local destination ground staff, in coordination with government advisories, airlines, hotels, cruise ships and other vendors, will make decisions with regard to your safety first. We strongly recommend that tour participants review the destination country's specific information at https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings.html.
Even the best-planned trips can be impacted by the unexpected. And that is why we recommend that you help protect yourself and your investment by purchasing Travel Protection for your Gate 1 trip. Travel Protection can help with medical coverage for illness or injury, trip cancellation and/or interruption, baggage loss, medical evacuation, and more. At any time before you complete Final Payment, you may choose to purchase Travel Protection. The protection plan premium is non-refundable after a 10-day review period. In addition, you must be medically able to travel at the time the premium is paid. For a summary of the plan details on coverages, benefits, limitations and exclusions, please refer to the Description of Coverage by visiting www.gate1travel.com/insurance/.
Cancel for Any Reason Waiver Benefit (CFAR) is a non-insurance feature that allows you to cancel up to 72 hours before your scheduled departure for any reason not otherwise covered in the Travel Protection Plan. CFAR must be purchased at the same time as the Travel Protection Plan as well as within 21 days of the original booking date. Independent or escorted tour reservations will be eligible for a future travel credit equal to the full cost of your trip, less the cost of initial deposit, airline-assessed fees, amendment fees, and insurance premium. Sea or river cruise reservations will be eligible for a future travel credit equal to 50% of the cost of your trip, less the cost of initial trip deposit, airline-assessed fees, amendment fees, and insurance premium. All CFAR credits are valid for a period of two years from the original date of travel. CFAR Credits have no cash value and are not transferrable. Airline-assessed fees are generally $300 per person, but may be as much as fully non-refundable. Some non-refundable airline tickets may retain value, less airline-assessed fees. Your future air credit must be used to book with the same airline. Deadlines to rebook and complete travel vary by airline and may be as early as 12 months from when the tickets were originally issued (not the date of travel). For details, www.gate1travel.com/insurance/.
This program does not apply to custom groups and Antarctica cruises. Residents of New York, Missouri & Minnesota may purchase this Cancel for Any Reason Waiver Benefit separate from Travel Protection. Call to speak with a reservation agent for details. This Cancel for any Reason Wavier Benefit is not insurance and is provided by Gate 1 Travel.
Mobile networks differ from country to country. We recommend you check with your provider to see if your wireless plan will work in the destination(s) you are visiting. To avoid possible roaming charges, you may want to consider purchasing an international plan. With most major phone companies, for a modest fee, you will be able to use your domestic plan's talk, text, and data allowances just like you do at home. If you can access the internet while you travel, you can also take advantage of services such as WhatsApp or Skype.
Making Telephone Calls from One Country to Another
When dialing a number from one country to another, you should proceed as follows: dial your country's Exit Code (often indicated with a “+” sign), then the destination Country Code, then the Phone Number. For most countries, the exit code is 00. Exceptions include the USA and Canada (011), Hong Kong and Cambodia (001), Australia (0011), and Russia (8 Pause 10*). For Brazil, please consult with the local telephone company. If you are dialing from a mobile phone, you can enter a “+” instead of the international Exit Code (011, 001, 0011 or 00) by pressing and holding the 0 key. For most countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and South Pacific, if you are calling from a local phone to a number within the same country, you should drop both the exit and country codes and then add a leading 0 (zero). Exceptions include Spain, Italy, Hungary and Malta (no additional zero needed to dial locally).
To dial the following number in Germany (as listed on your voucher): +(49) 0555-555
From USA or your US cell phone: 011-49-555-555
From another country in Europe: 00-49-555-555
From a German phone within Germany: 0555-555
WiFi is available in most airports, hotels, and cruise lines, as well as on some flights, trains, and buses. There may be a fee for access and service quality and speed may vary greatly especially while on moving vehicles. Availability on cruises is also dependent upon its location while sailing through multiple countries. Please note that WiFi can be extremely slow, unreliable, and sometimes nonexistent in developing countries.
Staying Healthy While Traveling
All travelers should familiarize themselves with local conditions, such as high altitude or required immunizations, which could affect their health. We recommend you consult with your personal healthcare provider, the Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov) and/or the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/en/) for their recommendations.
There are several easy steps you can take to stay healthy while traveling which may help prevent contracting an illness while away from home.
|Notice on Aircraft Cabin Insecticide Treatment - Please note that some countries may require aircraft cabin insecticide treatment for in-bound foreign flights. A list of such countries is available at:
Peru - While no inoculations are required, vaccination against yellow fever is recommended, especially if traveling to the Amazon. For the latest health requirements and recommendations, please visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization websites. You should also consult with your personal healthcare provider.
You may encounter mosquitoes in both urban and rural areas, especially during wet season. Travelers are encouraged to bring insect repellent and consider wearing clothing that adequately covers arms and legs.
Traveler’s diarrhea is common and is caused by contaminated food or water, often resulting in dehydration. You are advised to follow these steps to avoid or reduce the symptoms.
High Altitude sickness:
Altitude sickness occurs when there is less oxygen in the air that you breath at high altitudes, including Cuzco (11,000 feet) and Puno (12,600 feet). Altitude sickness will affect some travelers regardless of age, gender or physical fitness. Symptoms may include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness and trouble sleeping. For some it will pass within a few hours, however for many the condition if gone untreated may last for several days. We urge you to read and follow these suggestions in order to reduce the chances and/or severity of altitude sickness.
Consideration for Tour Participants (Escorted Tours)
For the benefit of all tour participants, we ask tour members to be considerate of their fellow travelers in the following ways: |
Climate & Clothing
Peru - The sun is strong, particularly in the higher altitudes. Please bring a sun hat that has a circular brim all the way around (not a baseball cap) and sunscreen. Pack comfortable, cushioned walking shoes for the hard cobblestone streets, a sweater, clothes you can layer and an all-weather jacket. When visiting Machu Picchu, please be aware that walking sticks are not allowed in some areas of the archaeological site and must be carried in a backpack. Prescriptions are required for walking sticks to be allowed at the Machu Picchu archaeological site and must be rubber tipped. Also selfie sticks are forbidden and only folding umbrellas are allowed. Remember that during your trip you will be traveling between different climate zones and will need to be prepared for all weather conditions. Please check to which season and region(s) you will be traveling and pack accordingly. Winter months (May - October) are cold. During those periods you will need a warm jacket, gloves, a hat and a scarf. Some religious sites may require modest dress to enter (no shorts, short skirts, or sleeveless tops).
Peru's climate varies by season and region. The coastal region (Lima) has two clear seasons, summer (December - March) and winter (May - October). Summer temperatures in this region can reach 80°F. Winter is generally damp and chilly, with temperatures dropping to 53°F. This region sees little rain, but can see mist and drizzle during the winter. The coastal area of Ica (Paracas, Nazca) enjoys warm dry weather throughout the year, with average temperatures around 75 - 80°F. The highlands region of Peru (Cuzco, Puno, Urubamba, Machu Picchu) has a dry temperate climate that also experiences two distinct seasons. The dry season (May - October) consists of sunny days and cold nights with very little rain. The rainy season in the highlands runs from December to March. Temperatures can change drastically during the day in this region, with highs around 65°F and lows of 35°F during the same day. The jungle region (Amazon River) is tropical and humid. Throughout the year temperatures range from mid to upper 80s during the day and drop into the 70s during the night. The summer months (April - October) are considered the dry season, though despite the name it should be noted that it rains two-thirds of the year in the rainforest. The rainy season (November - March) sees frequent showers and high river levels.
Peru Average Temperatures: https://www.gate1travel.com/weather/americas/default.aspx#peru-weather
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) or “drone” technology has quickly become affordable and is increasingly popular with recreational users. While some countries have clear, established drone laws, others do not, or existing regulations are undergoing review and change. Travelers who wish to bring a drone on their trip are responsible to research and abide by the laws and regulations of the countries they are visiting, as well as to check with their airline(s) regarding their rules for transporting drones. Please note that tours are unable to extend the length of scheduled visits and stops to accommodate use of drones.
Book & Film Recommendations
Many of our guests enjoy reading about their destination - either in advance of their trip or while traveling - as a way of adding context to their visit. Whether reading a traditional guide book, learning about the history and culture, or simply enjoying a fictional novel set in the destination, a good book can add greatly to your experience. Similarly, a good movie set in your destination helps set the mood before you travel. We asked our Tour Managers and staff to recommend books and films which past guests may have enjoyed. The following does not constitute an endorsement of any authors, books or films listed, it is merely a collection of guests' recommendations.

Preparing for Your Trip
As a courtesy service, complimentary airline seat assignments are requested on your behalf and, when available, are displayed in order of Passenger #1, #2 and so on. Assignments reflect the best available seats at the time of booking. Some airlines and/or fare types do not allow for pre-seating and require this be done at airport check-in only; in which case the display shows “N/A”. Seats are subject to change by your airline(s) including, for example, when there is a schedule change or equipment change after your initial booking; this may cause seat assignments to be changed or even cancelled. Some airlines offer preferred seating for an additional fee; these seats may only be purchased directly from the airline. You will need your family name and the 6-digit airline “Record Locator” which is displayed with the flight details on your reservation. In the event that you change seat assignments directly with your airline, changes will not be reflected on your invoice or documents. At the time that Gate 1 travel documents are issued, the currently assigned seats will be listed based on the assignments stored in your airline reservation at that time. Should you have questions regarding your assignments, please write to us at www.gate1travel.com/contactus.
Luggage & Packing
Checked bags are typically limited to a total dimension of 62 inches by adding length + width + height (example: 26"+26"+10" = 62”), and a maximum weight of 50 lbs (23kg). Smart Bags with a USB charging port, GPS tracking device and other high-tech features are prohibited as checked or carry-on baggage unless the bag is made with removable batteries and the batteries are removed and stored separately. Many airlines charge for checked bags including flights which begin and end within the USA. The most inexpensive airfare options commonly known as Basic Economy airfares do not include any checked bags nor seat assignments before the day of departure. However, for some airlines, other airfare categories also do not include checked baggage. This will be clearly displayed in our airfare selection and on your invoice. Where available, we highly recommend selecting airfares which include at least 1 piece of checked baggage. Gate 1 Travel is not responsible for checked bag fees, excess luggage or weight charges levied by an airline. Checked baggage allowances displayed on reservation details and invoices reflect the applicable allowance at the time of booking but are subject to change by your airline(s). For your airline’s requirements and fees, visit www.gate1travel.com/baggagefees.aspx. For important baggage information, visit www.gate1travel.com/luggage.aspx. Avoid placing valuables in your checked luggage. Federal law forbids the carriage of hazardous materials aboard the aircraft in your luggage, your carry-on or on your person. A violation can result in five years’ imprisonment and penalties of $250,000 or more (49 U.S.C. 5124). Hazardous materials include explosives, compressed gases, flammable liquids and solids, oxidizers, poisons, corrosives and radioactive materials. Examples: Paints, lighter fluid, fireworks, tear gases, oxygen bottles, and radio-pharmaceuticals. There are special exceptions for small quantities (up to 70 ounces total) of medicinal and toilet articles carried in your luggage and certain smoking materials carried on your person. Check the Transportation and Safety Administration (TSA) website www.tsa.gov to find out the current list of acceptable items you may bring on a plane before packing. We recommend that you use brightly colored luggage tags, straps or other identifiers to help you locate you luggage upon arrival or to describe it in the event that it is lost.
Day of Departure
Peru Domestic Flights
The airline tickets enclosed are for your international flights to/from Lima (provided that you purchased them from Gate 1). If tickets for your flights within Peru are not enclosed, you will receive your tickets (for example, Lima to Cuzco and vice-versa) once you arrive in Peru. Please note that your checked luggage has a maximum weight limit of 50 lbs per person on flights within Peru. This weight restriction may differ from your international carrier's and is subject to change.
A passport or picture ID is required to board all flights in Peru including the Nazca Lines overflight.
What to do if You Need Assistance
Whether you purchased your airfare from Gate 1 Travel or from the airline directly, please bear in mind that Gate 1 Travel does not own nor operate the airline(s), nor the airport facilities where they operate. At times, flying can be a frustrating experience, especially when things do not go exactly as planned, and airline explanations can be confusing or even misleading. Should you face a problem, remain calm and seek assistance either from the airline directly or from Gate 1. Please be aware that in most cases, on the day of your flight(s), airlines pass responsibility for your reservation to their staff at the airport and it is not always possible for Gate 1 Travel to intervene on your behalf, either through our reservations system or directly with your airline.
Arrival & Departure
Upon arrival, please complete immigration formalities if necessary and claim your luggage. If your program includes airport arrival transfers, check your voucher for specific instructions, as they vary with every destination. In most cases, you will be met after collecting your luggage or passing through Customs by the local representative who will be holding a Gate 1 Travel sign and/or a sign with your name on it. In some instances you will be instructed to walk a short distance to a transportation counter. The company's name and location will be printed on your voucher. If for any reason you do not connect with the Gate 1 transfer personnel, go to the Tourist Information Desk and ask them to page the Gate 1 Travel representative or phone the number on your voucher. If you are delayed due to lost luggage, phone the number on the voucher or have a companion exit the Customs Area to advise the transfer representative.
Be wary of airport scammers who offer unwanted assistance. If you are arriving without a pre-arranged transfer, we strongly recommend going to the Tourist Information Desk to ask for a licensed taxi or transfer service. You may be asked to pay for the transfer at the desk prior to the trip, this will ensure you are not charged extra during the trip.
What To Do When Your Flight Is Delayed
Airlines do not share flight manifest information. Therefore, the only way we may learn of a delay or schedule change while you are traveling is from you, the traveler. The sooner you are able to contact one of our offices, the better we can respond. Please refer to the Emergency Assistance instructions on this same document. Gate 1 Travel is only able to guarantee pre-reserved arrival transfers for up to one hour from the scheduled time, no matter the cause. In case you are delayed for any reason, and are unable to follow the instructions on your voucher, please make independent transfer arrangements and retain your receipts. Unused tour services, including transfers and hotel nights are not refundable. Upon you return home you will need to contact your airline and/or insurance carrier to investigate the possibility of reimbursement for any unused tour services.
If your program includes departure transfers, instructions will be stated on your voucher or provided locally.
Departure Flights - Some flights depart shortly after midnight in the very early morning on the day of departure. Transfers depart the hotel approximately 4 hours prior to flight time and therefore the final package overnight may be missed in the event an early morning flight is purchased. No refunds are issued due to unused services.
Due to local traffic and other extenuating circumstances, we ask that you allow 30 minutes from your scheduled transfer time for our representative to arrive. This includes hotel, airport and cruise transfers. Such possible delays are taken into consideration in scheduling transfers and you should therefore have no concerns about arriving late for your tour, flight or cruise. For transfers from a hotel, let the hotel reception desk or concierge know that you are waiting for a transfer. In the case of a missed transfer, reimbursement for your out-of-pocket expenses will be considered provided you obtain a written statement from the hotel's front desk verifying the length of time you waited, and the time you left the hotel, and a receipt for your transportation with time and date.
The cost of a transfer is more expensive than hiring a taxi, as a Gate 1 transfer necessarily includes round trip service, or 'dead-leg'. Often the places of call (airports, seaports, hotels) demand entrance and parking fees, where drivers may have to wait for up to an hour. Passengers comfortable hiring a taxi on their own and do not require assistance will save money.
About Your Escorted Tour Participants in Peru
Please note that the number of participants may vary during your tour as we accommodate travelers arriving at different points in the itinerary. Some participants will begin their tour in Quito, Ecuador while others will begin in Lima, Peru. At the end of the tour, some participants will depart from Lima while others will continue to Iquitos, Peru or La Paz, Bolivia. Upon arrival at your first destination, you will be invited to join a welcome orientation with your Tour Manager and will meet your tour companions.
About Your Accommodations
Gate 1 Travel has carefully selected each hotel based on overall quality, location, price, food, service, and cleanliness. All rooms are standard twin-bedded (two single beds) rooms with private facilities. Special requests such as bed types, smoking preference and connecting rooms are subject to availability. Room selection in all cases, unless otherwise reserved, is strictly at the discretion of the hotel's management on a run-of-house basis. Triple rooms consist of standard twin beds or one double bed plus a sofa/folding bed or cot for third person except in the U.S. and Canada, where triple rooms often consist of two double/queen beds for three persons; where available, a fee may be charged by the hotel for the addition of a cot/rollaway. The number of persons accommodated does not dictate the room size. Although available at most 4 and 5 star hotels, the use of air-conditioning abroad differs greatly from the United States, and is often shut down at night and from the end until the start of the summer months. Some lodges and accommodations in remote regions may not have all of the amenities, such as hairdryer, alarm clock and room service, that you might find in a larger hotel located in a city center.
Hotel Check-in/ Check-out
Hotel check-in time is generally not before 4:00 p.m. and check-out time is prior to noon. If you will be arriving early in the day or departing in the evening, hotels will usually allow you to store your luggage in their luggage room. Ask at the front desk if the hotel can check you in earlier, or let you stay later.
Peru Hotels - Most hotels in the Peruvian highlands don't have air-conditioning or central heating (although generally a space heater is provided in the room) and may have weak WiFi signal or limited bandwidth. Hotels in the Sacred Valley and Urubamba are often old haciendas that have been renovated and are located in rural areas where the closest store or restaurant may require a taxi ride The comfort level in these hotels may be lower than that in big cities. Lack of hot water and power outages are not uncommon. Some travelers may experience discomfort from the temporary effects of altitude sickness in the Peruvian highlands. Oxygen is available at the front desk of hotels, though not available for use in the rooms (unless there is an emergency). If desired, small disposable portable oxygen pumps can be purchased locally for around $15. Few hotels in Cuzco offer pressurized rooms for those who have difficulty adapting to the higher altitude.
At Your Destination
Eco & Sustainable Tourism
We support global efforts to create a more eco-friendly world, intolerant of any forms of cruelty, abuse and intentional environmental destruction. To that end we ask that our clients maintain a watchful eye as they travel, and report any abuses they may encounter. One of the many benefits of tourism is the shared cultural knowledge and ultimate elimination of negative behavior through education. We rely on your good feedback to enable this element of symbiosis. As you travel and learn about foreign cultures, we ask first and foremost that you practice tolerance and respect for local customs.
Tipping is always a matter of personal discretion. For your convenience, please use the summary below as a guideline for recommended gratuity amounts. Gratuities may be paid in local currency or US dollar equivalent where accepted. Please be aware that tipping is considered by many locals to be a part of their normal remuneration and some may approach you for additional "compensation." There is no need to be intimidated by the request, nor should you feel pressured to pay more than recommended. If you become uncomfortable by any behavior you encounter, please advise your tour manager or phone our local office. Numbers are provided in your documents for your convenience.

About Your Sightseeing
To ensure a pleasant and fair experience for passengers on our escorted tours, there is a mandatory seat rotation policy on our motor coaches which will be organized by your Tour Manager. On river cruises, color-coded group splits may be used for shoreside included and Optional tours. Some buses are equipped with toilet facility, however they are strictly intended for emergency use only and often require the vehicle to stop for safety reasons before use. When travel dates coincide with religious holidays and national celebrations, some monuments and sites may be closed, sometimes without prior notice. On these occasions, escorted touring itineraries may be amended to reflect these closures. Occasionally, during holidays and certain periods, and/or due to other unforeseen circumstances including weather conditions, there may be last-minute changes, sometimes after arrival, which may affect the sequence of the tour and locations visited. National monuments and tourist sites regularly undergo renovations, which can obscure the monument's view. No tour will be canceled due to renovations, however Gate 1 will decide based on the conditions whether to amend an itinerary. To respect the privacy of all tour participants, your tour manager will not organize a group photo or collect passenger email addresses for a group list.
Motor Coaches in Peru - The trip is active and requires a moderate level of fitness. During your sightseeing you will encounter steps particularly in ruins that are higher than our standards of stairs, as well as cobblestone streets and some dirt paths. Please note that motor coaches in Peru are not air-conditioned, with the exception of motor coaches in Lima. Air-conditioning is unavailable and considered unnecessary on coaches in the highlands region (Cuzco, Puno, Urubamba, Machu Picchu) where the temperature ranges between typical highs around 60-65°F and lows of 30-40°F. To view Peru's average temperatures, please visit https://www.gate1travel.com/weather/americas/default.aspx#peru-weather
Land Only Passengers (Escorted Tours)
Your tour manager will contact you after your arrival at your hotel. Passengers who have not purchased arrival transfers from Gate 1 Travel should proceed directly to the hotel for check-in. The details of the hotel can be found in your documents.
Purchasing Tours Locally
On escorted tours, the guides will generally sell optional tours to passengers who have not pre-purchased them. Payment can be made by cash or credit card, unless otherwise noted below. This does not apply to Independent packages. Please see Gate 1 Terms & Conditions for more information. https://www.gate1travel.com/terms.aspx#optional
Independent Activities - Gate 1 itineraries may contain suggestions for activities for your leisure time; these suggestions do not constitute a recommendation nor an endorsement of any specific service provider and the decision to participate in any such activities should be made independently and with due consideration. Gate 1 is not responsible for any activities not expressly included in its programs. Caution should be exercised when selecting certain activities that may require physical strength, coordination or exertion. Particular care should be taken when considering animal rides, such as on camels, mules or horses
Peru - The Sol is the currency of Peru.
Peru - ATMs are available in larger cities and towns, such as Lima and Cusco, but may not be accessible in rural areas. Plan to take out enough cash prior to traveling to the countryside. Most tourist areas accept and exchange U.S. dollars. Torn or slightly damaged bills will likely not be accepted by Peruvian stores and restaurants. Be sure to bring crisp and new U.S. Dollars. MasterCard is not always accepted in restaurants and it is recommended to carry a Visa card if you are planning to use a credit card.
Most people enjoy bringing home at least one souvenir from the countries they visit. However, some find any amount of shopping to be too much while others never find enough opportunities.
We have built into our Escorted itineraries a few shopping stops at recommended spots. These stops are designed to enhance your experience by providing an opportunity to see first-hand quality locally crafted merchandise which you may not be able to find on your own. Shops are checked to ensure the quality and authenticity of the products they offer, and we limit guides from visiting other locations. In some cases, we plan these stops to provide an opportunity to use clean bathrooms and to stretch your legs. All shops want your satisfaction, and therefore in case of any misunderstanding they ask that you kindly submit your claim to us within one week of the item's receipt. Claims submitted later will be subject to each store’s policies.
While shopping independently, we advise you to exercise care and common sense when making any purchase. Always get a formal receipt. And remember that, just like in this country, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is!
About Tax-Free Shopping
Tax-Free Shopping allows shoppers to reclaim the VAT (Value-Added Tax) or GST (Goods and Services Tax) they have paid on their purchases in some foreign countries in accordance with restrictions and procedures as dictated by each country. Refund eligibility varies by country, but may require presenting a scanned copy of your passport at the time of purchase, a minimum amount spent, or providing original store receipts. For more details, check the respective country’s online website, with the shop salesperson, with your tour manager or at www.globalblue.com for specific country regulations and airport operation hours. Please keep in mind that you must apply for VAT refund in the airport of the country the items were purchased and allow enough time prior to your flight for the application.
U.S. Customs & Shipping Charges
You may carry items with a fair retail value totaling $800 into the U.S. Taxes may be applied to the next $1,000 worth of merchandise. U.S. Customs determines the value of your items, often honoring a genuine sales receipt. Items which are shipped home are always subject to duty when received in the U.S. (in addition to shipping charges). Some shops may offer to include shipping and duties in the price but this typically means shipping only to the customs facility closest to you and payment only of the export duties; you would still need to collect the item and pay U.S. import duties. Please be aware that it is illegal to import products made from endangered animal species. U.S. Customs & Border Protection will seize these items, as well as most furs, coral, tortoise shell, reptile skins, feathers, plants, and items made from animal skins.
Peru - Peruvians are friendly, serious, honest and traditional people. When shopping for Peruvian handicrafts including pottery, textiles and wood carvings it is not uncommon to negotiate the price down by 20-40 percent.
Your Safety is Very Important
Prior to your trip, if you are traveling overseas, we strongly recommend that you visit the website of the U.S. Department of State at www.travel.state.gov, specifically the section which addresses International Travel. You should read the tips for foreign travel and travel warnings for the country or countries that you plan to visit. |
It is also important that you do not allow your common sense to take a vacation while on your trip. Here are several tips which, if followed, will save much potential hardship:
If you've purchased an escorted tour program, your travel documents will include telephone numbers of local Gate 1 Travel representatives who will do their utmost to assist you in the event of an emergency. The numbers are printed on your Gate 1 Travel vouchers. Please copy the numbers. Once you relinquish the voucher, you will not have this information. Passengers traveling independently should employ the services of hotel concierges and local authorities.
Peru - While we recommend that you apply reasonable caution and common sense when traveling in any country, please be aware that in Peru, there are significant issues with theft in public places. Always keep valuables in a safe place and avoid walking alone. We recommend that taxis be reserved via the hotel concierge desk when possible. As in most parts of the world, be aware of your surroundings and keep to well-lit and populated areas.
Tourist Street Scams
Pickpockets and thieves can destroy an otherwise wonderful holiday. Be mindful of these precautions to help avoid being scammed or robbed: |
Local Emergency Phone Numbers
Peru - Spanish is the official language. Quechua is spoken in some areas as well. English is generally spoken in tourist areas.
Please note: The U.S. uses 120 volts and you can purchase a converter and transformer at most hardware stores for your 120V appliances.
Peru - The voltage used is 220 volts.
Code of Conduct
Peru - Shaking hands is the standard greeting. Visitors should observe normal courtesies. The atmosphere is generally informal and casual dress is appropriate. Please demonstrate respect for the cultural artifacts of the indigenous people.
Meals & Dietary Requests
Included meals are based on the restaurant's buffet or set menu. Beverages are not included, unless specifically stated. Although special diets like Vegetarian and Vegan are relatively commonplace in the USA, much of the world's menu options are more provincial. Please do not expect to find the variety of food selection outside of the local norm. Every effort will be made to honor special dietary requests selected no later than 5 days prior to departure in the passenger details section of your reservation. In addition, we recommend that you make preferences known to your tour manager upon arrival, and at each hotel/restaurant. Special requests are subject to local conditions and availability and cannot be guaranteed.
Peru - Ceviche is one of the classic dishes of Peru - raw fish and shellfish marinated in lime or lemon and served with raw onion toasted corn and sweet potato. Another very popular dish, especially in the Andean region, is Cuy (Guinea Pig). Unique Peruvian drinks include Pisco Sour, the national drink of Peru, made from the white-grape brandy called pisco and the addition of lime juice syrup, egg white and bitters. Another unique drink is Chicha, a beer made from fermented maize. For non-alcoholic drinks, Inca Kola is the most popular soft drink in Peru and Mate de Coca, famous in the Andes region, is an herbal tea made from the coca leaves, used to treat altitude sickness. While it is generally safe to eat fully cooked meats and vegetables, care should be taken to avoid undercooked meat and raw fruits and vegetables. Because tap water is not potable, visitors should only drink bottled water or water that has been boiled and filtered. Avoid ice, as it is usually made from tap water.
On public holidays, there may be reduced public transportation, as well as limited hours or closures of attractions, shops and restaurants.

This trip was AMAZING. Not a vacation, but a total adventure! Jhonathen, out tour manager, was top notch. So friendly & professional. Luis & Jean Claude, the local guides, were equally great as well. Rossel, our driver, kept us totally safe on the crazy narrow streets of Peru. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who asks.Samara W.
This was our first gate 1 experience. We have been traveling to other countries but we have not used any travel company which was fun and at our own pace. When we were planning this trip to Machu Picchu my son recommended your company and told us we would not worry about details. It was good that we took his recommendation. True, it was a no worry trip. Your manager Dimas is so professional and caring. Dimas made sure everyone was safe, comfortable and made us feel like family. We all had that feeling of being in family. Dimas team Justin the driver made us feel safe. Alex team tour guide was always either in front, middle or behind everyone made sure the group was together. Lisat was our tour guide in Machu Picchu was so accommodating while we were in Machu Picchu. The last tour guide who assisted Dimas in Lima, Lizzete was very knowledgeable of the history of Lima. Most important and I was impressed, all of them were very helpful ,knowledgeable, courteous and we were never rushed. I very much give this Team Dimas a 10. And very much in the near future will use Gate 1 for our next travel.Elizabeth M.
The small-group walking tour to Machu Picchu and environs was an awesome trip. The success of the trip was due in large part to the leadership and participation of our guides, Paul and Jean. They were extremely well organized and kept us all on schedule. They were very professional and worked well together-smooth and seamless!! Their humor, energy and enthusiasm were contagious and helped our small group to bond and create a sense of community. They were very knowledgeable about the history of the sites we visited and Peruvian cultural traditions as well as comments on current life, such as the status of the Peruvian national soccer team or the role of women in Peru's police force. They patiently answered our many questions with a smile. In addition, they were able to identify plants, flowers, trees and birds on the trail. Although they have both hiked these trails many times before, they brought an attitude of freshness and newness to each hike. We had no major problems, but they handled the minor mishaps calmly, taking charge to solve them quickly. They are both excellent problem solvers!! Beyond their expertise is what I value the most: they treated each person of the group with respect, kindness and caring. They offered to help with whatever was needed. In addition to our guides, Julio was our driver for the trip outside of Lima and Oscar was our driver in the Lima area. Both drivers were skilled and amazing, given the narrow streets and traffic. Their driving was truly a feat of skill and precision!! As Tour Manager, Paul continually thanked and gave credit to the other members of his team. Both he and Jean are skilled and experienced leaders. I had complete trust in all members of the team.Susan G.
I had a great trip to Ecuador and Peru! Fast-paced and active vacation. Juan and Ivan were great in Ecuador, they shared their love of the country's beauty and history with us. Ivan drove us safely over the mountains and was there whenever he was needed to help in any way. Juan was great, making sure we were all well during the various activities and always coordinating and solving any concerns. Our hotel in the Amazon was fabulous, traveling by canoe was an adventure and the hikes were a great way to get to know the area....swimming in the river and enjoying the pool and food at the hotel was a perfect part of the vacation. Fausto was a hotel employee who assisted us in so many ways...he consistently supported those who needed assistance on the hikes or on the river and his knowledge of the local area was amazing. Our flights to Peru and within Peru were good...with a group of 16, it was amazing that we had no problems. I'm sure due to the organization and planning by Dimas and Freddy. They worked together as a team to assist us in any way. Dimas made sure to let us know how Gate 1 and tourism have helped his country! An active 5 days with good hotels and food, the amazing chance to see Machu Picchu...so many extras designed to make our trip comfortable. It was a vacation to remember...thank you to Gate 1 and all the guides that made it work!Pamela D.
The trip I took to Peru and Bolivia was of the best trip I have ever taken with Gate One Travel. It was very different trip. Gary our tour guy and his assistant were so kind, so attentive to everyone's needs in every moment. My heart is full of gratitude for these two gentlemen. You could tell they enjoy what they are doing and they both show us love by caring our back pack all the way to MACHU PICCHU and also they did whatever takes to make us feel so special. I have traveled with gate one to many countries and my next trip is to go to Japan, but I have never seen such an amazing tour guy and his assistant.. please honor these two gentleman and let them know how wonderful work they are doing.Shahin C.
Our trip - 7 Day Peru & Machu Picchu, was wonderful! I'd especially like to thank our tour manager, Ronald. He did a tremendous job to make this a success and memorable trip. He is not only knowledgeable of all things associated with Peru & Machu Picchu, but also very kind, professional, and patient toward all customers in his tour. I'd highly recommend Gate 1 to my friends, and I'm booking my next trip with Gate 1 now.Anchi O.
We were all 7 of us travelled together and we were very happy with our trip. We will surely recommend all our friends . Thankyou to all of you who worked with us over here and all the team over there in Peru. Our trip was successful because of all the hard work done by you all. We really appreciate all of you guys.Meiling T.
My trip to Peru was amazing! The itinerary was really fun and our tour guide Abel was phenomenal! Not only did he ensure that everything went smoothly as we traveled but he is also exceptionally knowledgeable about the history and customs of Peru. He made our trip very enjoyable.Sharon H.
We had a fantastic trip. Peru is a magic place, we are looking forward to visiting it again soon. This was our first time with Gate 1 Travel; we were impressed with the quality of service we received. The hotels, meals, excursions, drivers, and an outstanding tour guide made our trip unforgettable. We have already recommended this trip to our friends who are planning to visit Peru. Looking forward to traveling again with Gate-1-Travel in the near future. Thank you very much for everything.Maria N.
Our hiking trip to Machu Picchu was a dream come true. Although this was one of the most difficult things I have ever done, it was well worth it and I cant recommend this trip enough. 3 days of very challenging hiking were surrounded by several other wonderfully immersive experiences that made the trip so much fun and fulfilling. Paul and Frank were absolutely amazing as guides. Our driver, Daniel was also top flight! My wife and I felt welcomed, supported and deeply cared for during the entire trip. We had a small group of 11 that bonded quickly; I hope the friendships last a long time. The sites visited were spectacular, the accommodations were wonderful and the food was excellent. If you are physically able, and looking for a challenge, this is the only way to visit Machu Picchu and the rest of Peru. This trip gets two big "thumbs up" from me. Best of all my (6) Gate 1 trips! FYI: I'm 70 years old, so "yes, you can do this" if you train for it and respect the challenge.Thomas M.
Our trip to Peru and Machu Picchu was amazing. Our tour managers were both superb and I could not have asked for a better pair. They were both very encouraging and helped all of us to have a fabulous trip. I really appreciated the fact that they gave everyone the extra help and encouragement they needed to complete the hike. They are the reason that this trip was such a success. Both they and the driver, Daniel, went above and beyond to ensure that everyone enjoyed the trip. Both Frank and Paul made the effort to get to know everyone in the group and made a point of noticing the needs and addressing them on an individual basis. Additionally, on every trip there was a surprise from one of the three of them, be it an ice cream, a beer, or after the hike, a much needed massage. They clearly cared about all of us and wanted to be sure that we had a fabulous vacation. I will take another vacation with Gate 1 because of the tour managers and drivers that we experienced on this trip. Thank you for this experience.Cary W.
Great trip. Elvis, our guide was wonderful and the day guides and bus driver did a great job. Wonderful pick for lodging and meals. This was our 11th trip with Gate 1.Brian O.
My trip was awesome, wonderful, an experience I will never forget. The tour guide was also spectacular. Hard but enjoyable.Dorma M.
I am writing to commend the extraordinary service provided by Edgar, our guide on the recent tour to Peru with Gate 1. His thoughtful, innovative, and comprehensive approach not only exceeded our expectations but also encapsulated what makes Gate 1 a leader in the travel industry. Edgar's connection with us began even before our arrival, taking the time to get to know us personally. His ingenious idea to collect our meal preferences in advance ensured that our dinners were ready when we arrived at the restaurants, eliminating waiting times and accommodating our vegetarian choices. His knowledge extended beyond the borders of Peru, as he shared insights about various parts of the world, enriching our experience. Coupled with his ability to capitalize on local connections and expertise, Edgar managed to provide unique and authentic experiences throughout our trip. One of the most cherished memories for our family was when Edgar surprised our daughter with a chocolate birthday cake and had the entire tour group sing "Happy Birthday." It turned an ordinary day into an unforgettable celebration and demonstrated Edgar's sincere commitment to making our journey special. Safety was a clear priority for Edgar, and his constant vigilance allowed us to enjoy our adventure with peace of mind. His mindfulness of our well-being was consistent and unwavering. When there was chaos in central Lima, due to a strike, he ensured we made it through the airport safely and enjoyed an abbreviated tour through the unaffected areas of Lima. Edgar's ability to foster a familial atmosphere was equally remarkable. We formed relationships with members of the tour group. His personable nature, punctuality, and attention to detail helped us connect with one another, creating a bond that went beyond the typical tour guide relationship.Jayshree P.
Wow is all I can say! Gate1 really outdid themselves this time around. This was our second time booking a trip through Gate1 and I think we are hooked! We had the most amazing vacation in Peru and it was all thanks to our tour guide Edgar! He went above and beyond for everyone in the group. He shared his passion for his country and the history lessons were amazing. He is one of those people that you feel like a better person for just having met him! We now feel like we have a friend in Peru.Deanna C.
We have always been pleased with our Gate 1 experiences but this time we were blown away! Our Peru trip was unforgettable due mostly to the phenomenal efforts by Ronald, he went above and beyond all the tour guides I've ever toured with before. He was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Peru, all of his stories were fascinating. Ronald made it possible for us to try the Peruvian bread, tamales, fruit and guinea pig, that on our own, we probably wouldn't have. Ron treated everyone like family and told us to count on him at any time day or night. He was amazing at keeping everything running smoothly, always knowing who was missing, if a piece of luggage was not picked up, making sure everyone got their belongings off the train, getting everyone their accommodations quickly. He was also just so nice and personable, as was Joel, the assistant, who was also great at his job. We could always count on them for taking pictures and for recommendations on things to do. The tour of Machu Picchu was excellent, the hotels and restaurants were also great. I'm highly recommending the Peru trip to friends, but don't loose Ron, he really makes the trip!Lourdes J.
I just wanted to let you know that Jhonatan and José were exceptional-everything you would want guides to be. Jhonatan did an outstanding job of organizing everything. I have to eat a gluten-free diet and Jhonatan was probably the best guide I've ever had at being proactive to ensure I ate the correct food and didn't get sick. Kudos to Gate 1, Jhonathan and José for a trip that I will long remember!Jill B.
I wanted to let you know that we had a great trip to Peru. Everything was perfect: the flight arrangements, the transportation, the hotels and their service, the trips included, and the optional ones too. But the best part of our trip was our guide: Ruben. Without him, the few complications that arose, like the cancellation of our train to Machu Picchu, would have really ruined our total trip. Ruben was there for everything single question, special requests and needs we had. He is very knowledgeable and provided plenty of information for us to learn about Peru. His background on the Inca civilization, Cusco and the entire Sacred Valley was paramount in helping appreciate that part of Peru. Please give him our utmost thanks for all his helpBenjamin G.
It was one of the most amazing trips we ever did. We definitely plan on making more Gate 1 vacations soon!!!Allan C.
Three words...I loved it! I don't think I would have enjoyed Peru as much if I did not pick the walking tour. I love the walking tour. There are so many wonderful memories. Jose is an excellent Tour Manager. He is always smiling, kind, and very knowledgeable about Peru. His passion for his country shines through. Paul was a joy and worked very hard. His future shines bright. All the local guides are great and our bus drivers are very professional and kept us safe. I loved everything about this tour. I have to mention how much I loved walking with the llamas and the shaman ceremony. Thank you for a wonderful time and I can not wait to book another "walking tour" with you. Of all the many tours we have taken with you this is at the top of the list!Cheri O.
On behalf of my wife and I would to thank you for offering the "8 Day Inca Trail, Cuzco to Machu Picchu Walking Tour & Lima" it was a wonderful tour. As the first tour group to do this walking tour it was very well organized and the Tour Manager Senor~Jose, Senor~Paul and our driver Justin was all magnificent and very professional and well knowledgeable about the culture of the Inca people. Seeing one of the "Seven Wonders of the World" can't ask for anymore. Highly recommend this walking tour it's really worth doing. Thanks to our tour manager and Paul our group reach the summit and most important it was done in a safe manner.Merle D.
I feel compelled to contact you about how extraordinary our tour manager/guide Edgard is. This man has a wealth of knowledge and generously shared it with our group. He is passionate about his homeland and that passion is not only infectious, but we were able to be included in his joy of sharing it with others. He knows everyone, and that knowledge coupled with his friendships made our trip so much more relaxing and fun. There were no snags, no inconveniences, only enjoyment and positivity on this trip. My husband had never been on a tour before (I have made several Gate1 trips) and Edgard has set the bar quite high. Not only do we plan to return to beautiful, wonderful Peru, but will definitely use Gate 1 in our future travels. Thank you.Brenda Q.
I just come back from my "10 day classic Peru"-2022" trip. This was my very first trip with Gate1. I have been very impressed by the service given by Gate1. I appreciate very much to the entire service provided by Gate1 from the online booking, schedule changing, travel arrangement, and transportation. Peru has been a very attractive country to me for a number of years. This visit satisfied my curiosities and interests. Although I believe that there are just so many things/places that tourists can learn and visit about the country, I think that all programs arranged by Gate1 provide with us adequate opportunities to experience many aspects of Peru, from their fantastic natural/geographic views, national history, fascination culture, and attractive food. A total of 10 days trip in Peru was short and busy. Among the numerous memories about this new country, one of the most memorable things about this trip was our tour manager, Mr. Jimmy. He is a very thoughtful, warm, careful, and charming manager and tour guide. He made my trip worry free, and sometimes felt been "spoiled". I was very impressed by his professionalism, knowledge, humor, and endless efforts trying to make all group members enjoyable and safety. He is my best picking for any of my future tour manager when I go with Gate1. He is a trusted and attracted young man. At the end of trip, he encouraged us to tell our friends: "if you want to know about Peru, please come to visit our country". I would like to change the phrase using my word: "If you haven't known Jimmy, please come to visit Peru". When you know Jimmy, you know Peru! My trip to Peru was a very pleasant experience. I would recommend this trip to everyone who is interested to go, particularly, looking for Jimmy.Ruiqian W.
We had a FABULOUS trip to Peru and Machu Picchu! Our Tour Manager, Dimas, and his assistant, Richard, were THE BEST! This trip was on my husband's and my bucket list for a long time and planning this trip on our own, logistically, was too much to do on our own. We couldn't have been more pleased with Gate 1 Travel's planning and handling! Our stress free vacation was flawless, from flights, transfers, baggage handling, buses, trains, meals, hotels, local guides, and ticket handling. Our best friends went with us for their first Gate 1 Travel experience and they too were so impressed. Thank you again for making this trip a reality for all of us! More traveling to follow with Gate 1 Travel!Robin E.
We had a wonderful time. We came home proud of our climbing accomplishments, full of information about Peru and in wonder of this marvelous place. Peru is a magical. Our tour Guide, Rolly, was a fabulous guide who enriched our trip with his knowledge, experience, kindness, patience and passion for Peru. We couldn't have asked for anyone better.Jeannine T.
I want to continue to brag about the excellent tour manager, Abel, on our Kaleidoscope tour of Peru in October, 2022. He worked extra hard to make sure everyone was happy with the tours, the hotels, and anything he recommended. He constantly double checked that we were satisfied and our needs were being met. I've never experienced someone who is that attentive and hard working, and I've been on many different world traveling tours. I have friends who will be traveling to Peru in 2023 and I wish they could request him. Thank you for having such excellent employees. He is a gem!Pamela E.
Hello! I've just completed the online evaluation regarding our Peru Kaleidoscope trip (Oct. 1-12, 2022) and felt the need to provide additional written feedback about our overall experience. This was our first trip with Gate 1 and....WOW! What an incredible experience! We feel so blessed to have our first experience be such an unforgettable trip from beginning to end. Our Tour Manager, Abel, was SO friendly, welcoming, caring, and knowledgeable. He was able to facilitate such a great connection and bond for our group of 28 which resulted in a fantastic group experience where we all looked out for one another and supported one another. He is such an empathetic leader and added so much fun and humor to our days together. He helped to create such a memorable experience for all of us. Our drivers (especially Ernesto) and tour assistant, Frank, and local tour guides were so special, too. They cared about us - they laughed with us - and they showed their pride for their beautiful country. We fell in love with Peru, the people AND Gate 1 - all because of the experience created during our travels. We're telling all of our friends and family to travel with Gate 1 AND travel to Peru!Jane S.
My first trip w gate 1 travel did not disappoint. It was wonderful. Our accommodations were very nice and clean. Our guides were absolutely fantastic. Abel, Frank, and Maribel were kind, informative and helpful with any of our concerns. Thank you so much.Rosanne S.
It was AMAZING!!!!! I've traveled to all 7 continents, but this was my first trip with Gate 1.Let me just say that I was so impressed with the logistics handling and the smoothness of how the trip was run. Also, I want to let you know that our tour leader in Peru, Dimas, was the best we have ever had bar none on ANY of our other travels. You are very lucky to have him on your staff! Thanks again for a great trip. As mentioned, this was our first Gate 1 trip, but it won't be our last!Kent M.
We had a wonderful trip to Peru with Gate 1! This was our first Gate 1 experience but definitely not our last! Every little detail was taken care of - the transfers, the hotels, the meals! The hotels were first rate and meals superb! Our tour guide Odon was an absolute gem! He introduced us to his country, culture and customs and we have a much better understanding of Peru and its people. Thank you so much for an amazing trip - it was magical!Gerald C.
Gary -The best tour manager we have experienced with so far. Gary was fluent in English & he spoke clearly and was easily understood; using WhatsApp as a communication tool was excellent and perhaps should be used by other tour managers to provide travel updates and sharing posts among travel group. Gary's attention to details was very outstanding and manifested itself in everything he was supposed to do and arrange for our daily itinerary. Gary has a great problem solving skill and we saw it when our travel group was challenged with unexpected events like train ride delay or transportation problem. Gary made our domestic flight in Peru so easily by being proactive; obtaining everyone's luggage, taxes and boarding passes. Gary had extensive knowledge of historical and archaeological highlights of Peru. In summary, Gary is one of the best tour managers we have had among all trips we have taken with Gate1 so far.Ahmed D.
The trip to Peru was excellent. I want to give a special shout out to Abel, the tour manager. He was fantastic, very attentive, incredibly knowledgeable about Peru, it's history, culture, and economy; and warm and engaging. Every detail was taken care of, transportation, food, tours, optional tours, accommodations. When one of the tour participants felt I'll, he took it upon himself to get her medicine. Honestly, Abel was key to making this trip a success and a wonderful representative of the Gate1 company.Debra H.
Wow! We just returned from your 10-day Peru tour, and I want to take a moment to let you know what an incredible tour manager you have in Rolly. He truly treated us like family, and his attention to detail made our trip such a wonderful experience. My wife has done five different Gate 1 tours, and she shared that Rolly is by far the best tour manager she has had. We have already been posting on social media and several of our friends are looking into taking trips with Gate 1. I am certain that Rolly had a huge part of making our experience so enjoyable, so I wanted to be sure and share this feedback.Christopher B.
My tour of Peru was one of the most enlightening trip I've taken. We got to see the culture first hand. The floating islands of Uros on Lake Titicaca was fascinating. The tour director Victor went above and beyond to make our tour pleasing and enjoyable. It was obvious to me he and his staff of Johnathan and Justin really cared about our enjoyment. Johnathan was so kind and patient and Justin was an amazing driver on the hairpin curves and challenging traffic. The altitude was a challenge but Victor and Johnathan were understanding and very helpful with those of us who had difficulty.Jane B.
I just completed my survey of our recent trip to Peru. Your survey form is automated, and didn't really give me the chance to give the high praise I felt needed to be given to all of your staff in Peru, especially our tour guide, Alejandro. I imagine guiding a tour is much like herding cats (no easy task!), but Alejandro pulled it off with no issues. His passion for Peru and it's history was genuine and contagious, and he made 28 people from very different cultures and backgrounds feel like we were part of his family. Peru is an amazing place full of wonders, but it was Alejandro and the other staff members that made our trip so special, and the reason we'll be returning to Gate1 for our next adventure.John B.
My partner and I recently returned from our 11-day Ecuador, the Amazon and Peru adventure with Gate1. The entire trip was fabulous from start to finish. We were not only blessed with excellent guides, but we had a a wonderful group to boot! (This was our fourth group tour and that doesn't always happen!) We continue to be impressed with the logistics involved and have noticed an upgrade in most of the accommodations provided. Tour guide Marco was excellent in Ecuador and the Amazon. We found him knowledgeable, professional and a whole lot of fun. Tour guide Abel was equally excellent. We have found that it can be a challenge for the second guide to win everyone over as many people get used to a style and can struggle with change. We were so impressed how Abel took great care to win everyone over with his caring nature and winning sense of humor. Personally, I got sick in the town of Machu Picchu the day after visiting the sacred valley. Abel took immediate action and got me some meds that worked like a miracle. He is a gem and Gate1 is lucky to have him. Again, we are Gate1 fans and we look forward to our next adventure. We have watched Gate1 go from good to great...not easy!Gary T.
Our tour guide, Marcos was absolutely amazing. We had so much fun and we learned so much. He was up front about everything, very informative, and very approachable. His English was excellent. He went above and beyond to help me find a specific gift (a specific soccer jersey) for my son, along with helping other travelers. We all just adored him. We never went hungry, thirsty, or lacked any humor and laughter. You can tell Marcos genuinely loves his country and his people. I cannot say enough about our experience through Gate 1 in general, and our Peru trip was just astonishing, thanks to Marcos's guiding and personality. I am a social studies teacher and I cannot wait to bring back and use so much of what I learned. Thank you for having Marcos on your Gate 1 team, and thank you for a wonderful traveling abroad experience.Heather M.
We recently traveled to Peru with Gate 1. This was our first experience with this travel company and we were very impressed with how smoothly everything went and how organized our trip was. We really can't say enough good things about our tour manager, Rogger. He was amazing and went above and beyond to make sure that our party and the entire group was taken care of in every way. He was attentive, helpful, kind, and patient with everyone. He was able to bring us all together as a family and helped everyone make memories that will last a lifetime. Rogger is passionate about his country and he is eager to share his knowledge and expertise with visitors. I am so appreciative to him, and to his assistant Alvaro who was also amazingly knowledgeable and very kind, for helping me and my children have an incredible vacation together in Peru. I will definitely recommend Gate 1 to my family and friends.Nina M.
We enjoyed everything about our Peru/Machu Picchu trip and definitely a once-in-a- lifetime experience! Entire tour was very interesting. Tour Manager in Peru (Mr. Henry) and His Assistant Colleagues were excellent; they had incredible knowledge and in-depth insight on the Incan history. Henry captivated us with his story telling skills. He makes history come to life. We were able to travel at a certain pace, stop and take pictures or just rest as needed. Trips were very well organized in a professional way. We learned about Peru history, art, culture, food, agriculture, silver mining, religion and much more. Henry used Peruvian/Inca words and explained their meaning. We enjoyed beautiful flower gardens at Hotel Agusto's, Urubamba. Our transfers between airports, cities and tours were well planned and we felt very well taken care of. Guides were friendly, helpful, and considerate and took good care of us. Tour guides clearly loves their job and feels passionate about their work. We were very happy with our tour guides - they went above and beyond to make our trip special. They were great and spoke excellent English. Time and money well invested!Mary C.
It was amazing! Henry and Leo, our tour managers were very knowledgeable, organized and fantastic! Our drivers, Mario amd Dante were excellent too! We felt safe with them. Peru is an excellent tourist spot. Everything went smoothly, from our flights, hotels, to land tours. Thank you! For sure I will use Gate 1 again for my next adventure.Caroline S.
Washington is an excellent guide. He is very well organized, even with all the changes due to the closure of the airport. His language skills are perfect. We especially appreciated the extra information and experiences he provided as a local resident. He went out of his way to ensure everyone had the best experience possible. He even arranged for my kids to attend a local soccer game after the tour was completed. Our luggage was damaged during one of the flights and he ensured that claim was filed correctly and followed up with us after the tour was completed. His care for people didn't apply to just the tour group. He was passionate about the education and wellbeing of the Peruvian children we encountered at our stops. He is the type of person you want representing your company. Percy and the local guides were also very knowledgeable and did a great job making sure everything went smooth on our trip. The bus drivers were amazing, especially Ernesto. Maneuvering the large bus through the areas that he did, under those traffic conditions, is beyond belief. It's the people you hired in Peru that made this the excellent trip that it was.Robert K.
Absolutely outstanding! We loved this trip! And we are grateful for the awesome people at Gate 1 from the agents to the tour guides to the logistics team. What a great company!Christine C.
I just wanted to let Gate 1 management know what an amazing Tour Manager/Guide Maruicio was. I cannot say enough good words about him and I cannot image a better Guide! He was VERY organized and communicated each day's plans very well. He watched out for all of us his Tour like we were his children - making sure that we were all satisfied at restaurants - talking to staff to make sure everything was what we ordered and coming to us in a timely manner. He was very entertaining which helped make the longer bus trips go by quickly. He was also very patient with all of the people on the tour even when some didn't follow directions very well. He went above and beyond his required duties giving us little treats from time to time. He sold me on Gate 1!Mark F.
Yes, I recently got back from and Bolivia trip and I would like to mention that it was an excellent experience. I loved the different sites and activities for every day. The Tour Manager, Roger was excellent. He kept every day interesting and moved at the perfect pace. I really enjoyed Perú. The driver Justino, in Peru was very professional. For all the hotels, I loved the ones in Cusco (José Antonio) and the one in la Paz (H. Europa). Another great trip. Thank you.Guadalupe R.
This is the first time I have traveled with Gate1 and Gate1 exceeded my expectation! The trip was well planned and managed, not only that I got a chance to see many wonderful views of Peru but also learned the in-depth history of Inca Empire. I want to praise my tour guides, Ruben and Percy, who were so knowledgeable, kind, warm, friendly and patience with our group. Ruben took the extra step for us to experience the tasting of a Guinea pig. Percy carried all the backpacks for the elderly while climbing up the hills at Machu Picchu. Also, our fabulous driver Mel kept us safe and secure during out trip. My daughter and I really appreciate their services, their compassion about people and energy during the trip. Because of the excellent experience with Gate1, I will definitely use Gate1 again and have already started recommending Gate1 to others!Peter L.
I wanted to write to praise our tour manager Edgar C. Edgar was a consummate professional - so knowledgeable about Peru. He clearly loves and is so proud of his country and his heritage. His year's of experience and his personal love of Peru's rich history and culture made our trip that much richer. He managed all of us beautifully, brought the group together and provided so many wonderful insights. I also appreciated the individual tour guides specific to Puno and Lima. They added to the experience and the level of education and information shared with us.Kathy C.
Prior to the pandemic, we had traveled several trips with Gate 1. This was our first trip post pandemic with Gate 1 and it was one of the best trips we have ever taken with Gate 1. Both of our tour managers, Jose and Gary were the very best we ever had! It was like having your own tour guide for each segment of the trip. They truely cared about the traveler and wanted to share everything about their country with you: the food, the culture, the environment, their lives, it was like having a family member with you. It really appeared to us that during the time that the pandemic shut down travel, Gate 1 used this time to better understand it clients and improve their services so that when travel resumed, our experience would be better than prior to the pandemic. And it was. To say that Gate 1 upped their game would be an understatement. We have another trip booked with you this September and we can't wait, Gate 1, you have won us over for all of our future trips. Your tour managers, your support, your selected hotels and agendas are top notch and I would recommend you to anyone that is planning to travel the world. Thanks Gate 1 for being a much better travel service than prior to the pandemic!Ted S.
This is my first time travel with Gate1 and had a wonderful experience. The trip is well planned and managed, and I got chance to see many wonderful views and places, and enjoyed my travel a lot. Especially, I want to praise my tour guide, Victor, who is so kind, warm, friendly and patience with our group. He is very considerate and provide all the supports, guide and help we needed during the trip. My friends and I really appreciate his services and his passion and energy during the trip. This trip has been such an amazing experience to me and I already start to plan my next trip with Gate1!Ji G.
We just traveled last week, Ecuador and Peru. It was a very nice travel. Gate1 did a fantastic job, from the airport to the hotels, to the tour. Everything was very smooth and relaxing. Thank you Gate1. I will travel with Gate 1 again on our next vacation.Carlos I.
My family and I had a wonderful time in Peru!!! We are so happy we traveled with Gate 1. Our tour manager, Americo, was fabulous and was the best tour manager anyone could ask for. Being a native of Cusco, Peru, Americo helped us see Peru from the perspective of someone who truly loves his country as well as Gate 1! We had fabulous bus drivers during our travels. My family and I felt secure and safe during our entire trip! Americo is a genuinely nice person. We would love to have him as our tour guide for future trips. Our hotels were amazing, especially Inkaterra Machu Pichu Pueblo Hotel! Americo's promptness and planning allowed our tour group to enjoy all the wonders of Peru. All of Gate 1 staff during our time in Peru were gracious hosts. They were helpful and educational. Our stops in Peru were all amazing and well planned. Updates by Gate 1 prior to our trip and during the trip were informative. We were sad when the trip ended.Beth Z.
