Know Before You Book - High & Low Water

European river cruising has gained in popularity for very good reason. It's a relaxing and convenient way to experience Europe while enjoying the comfort of a deluxe ship. However, before making the decision to reserve your vacation, please be aware of potential conditions which may impact your cruise. While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On very rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. These events typically occur with little or no notice. In the event that a cruise is partially or completely impacted, the itinerary will be operated by deluxe motor coach, accompanied by a Tour Manager, with overnights in hotels. The itinerary will include as many of the originally scheduled sightseeing features as possible, considering the travel time and distances required, as well as meals. While it is not possible to recreate the more leisurely comforts of sailings, we will endeavor to provide a comparable itinerary. These alternative services will be provided at no additional charge.

Entry Requirements:
Passengers traveling abroad require a passport valid for six months beyond their travel dates. All travelers are responsible to check if a visa is required for all countries on their itinerary. For visa information, check our Visas page.

Wonderful trip. Enjoyed the tours and loved the ship. Very nice. The staff and the crew were helpful and accommodating. Most of all, Adrien Kiss made the trip comfortable and pleasant. She is a caring and considerate person that is easy to approach with questions. She will always come back with an answer. Very helpful. Thank you.

We absolutely loved our trip. The Monarch Empress was beautiful with well-planned spaces and an attentive, cheerful, well-trained crew. Our Tour Director, Mick, was exceptionally knowledgeable with regard to the ports we visited. The tours were well-planned. Both Mick and Adrien went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. We are already looking forward to another Gate 1 vacation.

I highly recommend the Gate 1 Rhone River cruise. The boat, itinerary, tours, guides were all great. And the fact that we paid thousands less made it sweeter. The food was what I would expect on any cruise. So you can book it with confidence, and maybe even take it yourself!

The trip was great. We were very happy with every aspect of the cruise - particularly the tour directors (specially Herbert - a real champion!) who were outstanding. Peter, the Executive Chef and his team also produced superb meals and all the service and housekeeping staff were terrific - unfailingly friendly and incredibly helpful. Amelia's service and wine knowledge were impressive and Stefan's bar service (especially his bloody marys) was legendary. The Master and crew did a great job getting us through without falling prey to shallow and obstructed waterways. We'd happily very strongly recommend this cruise to anyone.

My trip was wonderful... I had a great time... From the moment that I stepped off the plane, until I got back on... Everything was taken care of for me... The hotel was lovely, the staff was friendly and sooooo helpful.. The tour guides both in Amsterdam, and on the trip were great. The ship and the crew were great.Enjoyed all the tours, and information about each location.. It was my first trip abroad, and first river cruise. I found it a very positive experience, and would recommend it, and Gate 1 to others.

We have returned home after 5 weeks away in Europe The gate 1 river cruise was wonderful. The boat a little tried but the staff, crew & cruise director & guides were absolutely fantastic We could not fault anything The mix of Aussies, Canadians & Americans were a great bunch of people & everyone got on & we never had a problem with waiting for anyone which is usually The food was fantastic alway too much but you didn't have to eat all of it. Chef was a great guy, as was the Captain. Very approachable & knowable Lorin our cruise guide for the green team was so,so good. So much knowledge & history of the area we cruised & the beautiful old towns. He normally looks after the French rivers & if we ever did that area we would ask to be on his boat. That how good he was & had a great sense of humour Thank you Gate 1 for a very well organised 16 day cruise

We had an amazing trip! I can't tell you how impressed I was....from the hotel accommodations, the beautiful ship, our tour restaurants in Cesky Krumlov (Cave) and Salzburg (Monestary) were beyond our expectations, and most importantly our tour guide, Soma from Hungary was the best . For someone who is so young, he showed immense maturity and his knowledge and passion of all the ports and historical background was quite impressive. He had a great sense of humour and a lot of patience dealing with the varied age groups. Annick and Barbara were the guides who joined us on the boat and together they complemented each other so well and also worked seamlessly together. Our cabin steward was Kevin and he was most pleasant and attentive. We will definitely consider another Gate 1 river cruise or land tour. The crew of the ship were also great and we enjoyed the "talent show" that they put on for the guests. Our first Gate 1 trip......and it won't be our last

The Gate 1 Travel 16 day European River Cruise was absolutely fabulous! We had a great trip. The crew and staff were fabulous. The tours were very well organized and implemented. Sabin, the waiter, was absolutely the best ever on all my sailings. He made a point of knowing all his passengers, their desires, and made each feel special. And, he was always helpful to the other waiters when they needed it. The 3 cruise directors were all excellent, especially, Mick, the head of the 3. Very knowledgeable and well planned. I was especially impressed with the silly ways they were able to host entertainment in the evenings. Always creative. It's nice to learn you opened in Australia. Guessing about 80% of the passengers were from there. All very friendly and interesting. Thank you for the opportunity. I am still a great fan of Gate 1.

Sorry for the tardy reply, we were in Europe for quite a while and our trip culminated in a 10 day hike around Mont Blanc so we only had limited access to emails etc. We were extremely pleased with the Gate1 River Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam - having never heard of the company prior to booking. There is no doubt we will be looking for more travel opportunities with Gate1 as we felt that it was very good value for money (as did the majority of Americans who we met on the cruise). We were on board the "Sound of Music" and it was very comfortable - one thing that had been putting us off booking river cruise (beside the possibility of sea sickness) was having to get dressed up for dinner every night etc. We found the relaxed atmosphere of this boat very much to our liking (and the cabin was fabulous).

We are home and all was amazing on the trip. Special mentions should go out to the catering staff, as the food was way above our expectations. The shore excursions were great as expected. Well organized and friendly tour guides. (Jean was our "red group" leader and did a fantastic and entertaining job) The ship was clean (being less than a year old) and there seemed to be a genuine pride in working on the Gate 1 Monarch Empress from the captain to the cabin stewards. The onboard activities were good and Saber tried to keep everyone who wanted to be involved .... busy!! We have already talked to friends about the great trip, and hopefully will book another trip.

I must say that I had a wonderful time on my last cruise. The Gate 1 staff were wonderful, in particular Sabi our cruise coordinator. He has a lot of patience and he looked into all the fine details that would allow us to enjoy our cruise comfortably .He's always there to help . I am impressed with the information we got prior to all events so we knew what's going to happen on the next day and all the important issues that we needed to be aware of. We had a great time on the cruise. The high water gave the captain a few challenges but he got us through safely, we saw all the programmed attractions and we finished on time. The Tour Directors had to do many calls to the bus companies and local guides to cater for the time change effects of high water to our travels and again this worked out extremely well. The food and service was extremely good but the wine provided with the meals should have been local to the country rather than Italian and Spanish for many of the meals. The guided walking tours were very good both the guides and the towns except for Nuremberg which I was keen to see in detail the location of where the 2nd WW trials were held. We went past it in the bus and saw very little. Overall were were pleased we went with Gate 1 Travel, it does not provide as much as the other Australian tour companies but it is cheaper than them. We will recommend your company and this trip to our friends.

We had a very nice time. The staff was exceptional. Everyone was delightful. The food was excellent, especially the soups, and the chocolate cake. Kevin, who made up our rooms, knew our names by the first day, and always greeted us in the hallway with a smile. Adrian, our tour manger, was THE BEST EVER!! She ran circles around us, was so attentive, sweet, and extremely responsive to any questions and needs. We enjoyed the tours, and the pace was good for our older parents that came with us.

Everything ran smoothly and we had a fantastic time. Loved Europe. We met people, now friends in our own age group on the Sound of Music which was a bonus, although we found most people travelling the world whatever their age group are young at heart anyway and we met some very nice and interesting people. And 60% Aussies on the boat was also great. As we discussed prior to the trip; Simon & I did our own thing for part of the time and joined the tours when it suited us so we enjoyed that option. The evenings started out pretty quiet and even dull at times but the entertainer was open to suggestions which livened it up for the people who wanted to have some fun, which we did. The tour directors did a great job, even though we didn't join all of the tours, they were very well informed and had a good sense of humour. The food was ok and the staff great. I haven't been on another cruise in Europe due to the exorbitant cost but based on what we saw of the other ships and the fact that we basically do the same itinerary I would highly recommend Gate 1 because of the fantastic price they offer. We wouldn't have done it otherwise and we were very happy with our trip. Having the transfers provided for arrival and departure made it so easy and took away any concerns especially with older passengers who may worry about how they will find their way once arriving at the airport. I was particularly pleased with the fact that we could fly to another destination when it suited us and still be transferred to the cruise once we arrived in our cruise departure destination.

We were unsure what to expect having never been on a river cruise or travelled with Gate 1 before, but we were greatly impressed. I cannot praise our tour director Mick enough, the extent of the service that he and the other Gate 1 tour guides provided seemed to be above and beyond the call of duty. He provided personal support right up until the last second, and all the other guests as well, after the post cruise tours finished in Lucerne. Even though other river boats seemed much more extravagant than the Sound of Music, the fact that our trip was was not as costly and yet still extremely comfortable made us very pleased. And of course the level of service was not the least way affected. We would consider another of your tours in the future
