Know Before You Book - High & Low Water

European river cruising has gained in popularity for very good reason. It's a relaxing and convenient way to experience Europe while enjoying the comfort of a deluxe ship. However, before making the decision to reserve your vacation, please be aware of potential conditions which may impact your cruise. While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On very rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. These events typically occur with little or no notice. In the event that a cruise is partially or completely impacted, the itinerary will be operated by deluxe motor coach, accompanied by a Tour Manager, with overnights in hotels. The itinerary will include as many of the originally scheduled sightseeing features as possible, considering the travel time and distances required, as well as meals. While it is not possible to recreate the more leisurely comforts of sailings, we will endeavor to provide a comparable itinerary. These alternative services will be provided at no additional charge.

Entry Requirements:
Passengers traveling abroad require a passport valid for six months beyond their travel dates. All travelers are responsible to check if a visa is required for all countries on their itinerary. For visa information, check our Visas page.

I had a wonderful trip to Switzerland. Our tour manager and guide, Monique was excellent. She was so knowledgeable about the culture and places we saw, and she really helped make the trip so enjoyable. Kurt, our driver, was also great. We stayed in lovely hotels, and the itinerary was wonderful, enabling us to see and do so much. I have visited Switzerland many times, but this was my first time with a tour. I would definitely consider going on another tour with Gate 1.

It was wonderful; loved the itinerary, the great hotels, the Rhine River cruise, staying 2 nights in almost every city, our guide and the excursions that we took. Plus we had a small group which made it even better. Loved Germany and Austria, and the free days where we could roam the cities and do some activities that we had planned. Another great job by Gate 1!

Everything about the Gate 1 package was fabulous! It's certainly a well-oiled machine that assists guests in every way possible. The Monarch Empress, ALL of the staff, the excursions and local tour guides and tour managers could not be faulted. I hope to travel again with Gate 1 and have already recommended the company to friends and family who ate likely to travel.

A great experience! Beautiful weather...beautiful blue-green lakes, green pastures dotted w/grazing cattle, goats & sheep...towering white-capped Alps...even the white puffy clouds added to the overall beauty of Switzerland! We loved the sounds of cattle bells, the beautiful music of the long horns, the church bells in all all the little villages & towns...but we did miss hearing the yodeling! Our tour guide...Remo...made it all happen...we loved his wit, his knowledge...first time for a guided tour in Europe, so first Gate 1 experience, and cannot imagine not having Remo for future trips! We hated to leave Switzerland & hated saying goodbye to Remo!

Our trip was fantastic! There is not one thing we could recommend that would have made our trip anymore enjoyable. Your attention to details was faultless. The crew and all Gate 1 travel personnel went out of their way to insure our every needs and desires were taken care of prior to our need to ask. The food was gourmet quality, the variety was appreciated and the service was excellent! The pace and organization of the trip was perfect. The included tours at each stop covered all the important highlights and then the free time we had to do as we wished were in perfect balance. Our days were full without being rushed and of course we could opt out of anything we didn't want to do. We very much appreciated the option to stay in town for lunch and added free time rather than having to go back to the boat and go back with the group. This was our first trip with Gate 1. We met other couples who have taken up to 9 previous Gate 1 tours. We now understand why they choose Gate 1 and we'll follow in their footsteps!

We had a fantastic trip! We had previously done the 15-day land tour of (Romantic) Italy with Gate 1, but this was our first river cruise. The countryside along the Rhine is so beautiful, that any free time we spent viewing the scenery, whether from the upper deck or lounge, was a highlight of our cruise. We enjoyed sightseeing in the charming cities, villages, and towns, and the daily tour guides provided us with lots of information, each in their own unique style. The entire crew on the Monarch Baroness were outstanding and they all should be commended! They were friendly, cheerful, knowledgeable, extremely accommodating, and solicitous. They really helped to make our trip a memorable experience!! Our cabin was quite comfortable, despite its compact size; we thought it was great that there was actually room for a comfortable armchair near our French balcony, in addition to the desk chair. And, the public spaces on our river boat were kept immaculately clean. In short, we loved this trip - it was such a nice way to travel! In fact, I'm already starting to plan our next European river cruise for 2018 in my head! Thank you Gate 1 Travel. You never disappoint!!

The trip was wonderful. It was my fourth trip with Gate 1 and my first river cruise. River cruises are the way to go!! Everything went smoothly from the initial booking with Judith, to the flights and connections, to the cruise itself. We were pampered from the moment we stepped on board. The whole staff was very attentive and the cruise director, Soma, was unflappable as was the activity director, Amir, who had the most amazing energy. In Budapest, Adrien was most helpful and full of suggestions. I have been singing Gate 1's praises to anyone who will listen.

We absolutely loved our trip. The Monarch Empress was beautiful with well-planned spaces and an attentive, cheerful, well-trained crew. Our Tour Director, Mick, was exceptionally knowledgeable with regard to the ports we visited. The tours were well-planned. Both Mick and Adrien went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. We are already looking forward to another Gate 1 vacation.

I highly recommend the Gate 1 Rhone River cruise. The boat, itinerary, tours, guides were all great. And the fact that we paid thousands less made it sweeter. The food was what I would expect on any cruise. So you can book it with confidence, and maybe even take it yourself!

The trip was great. We were very happy with every aspect of the cruise - particularly the tour directors (specially Herbert - a real champion!) who were outstanding. Peter, the Executive Chef and his team also produced superb meals and all the service and housekeeping staff were terrific - unfailingly friendly and incredibly helpful. Amelia's service and wine knowledge were impressive and Stefan's bar service (especially his bloody marys) was legendary. The Master and crew did a great job getting us through without falling prey to shallow and obstructed waterways. We'd happily very strongly recommend this cruise to anyone.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip through Switzerland. Otmar was an excellent guide, very organized with lots of valuable information about the country. Hotels were very nice. Pace of activities was good and Otmar had good suggestions for activities and restaurants during our free time. Otmar was very helpful in arranging transportation to the airport from Lugano to Milan. We continue to be impressed by Gate 1's itineraries and value. We look forward to our next Gate 1 trip in May.

My trip was wonderful... I had a great time... From the moment that I stepped off the plane, until I got back on... Everything was taken care of for me... The hotel was lovely, the staff was friendly and sooooo helpful.. The tour guides both in Amsterdam, and on the trip were great. The ship and the crew were great.Enjoyed all the tours, and information about each location.. It was my first trip abroad, and first river cruise. I found it a very positive experience, and would recommend it, and Gate 1 to others.

We had a wonderful time. While we have toured with other companies, this was our first time with Gate 1 and we were very pleased. We had an excellent tour guide, Remo Beretta, and we enjoyed the accommodations and the food, and it was a very good trip. Even the weather cooperated. So, thanks to you, and Gate 1.

We have returned home after 5 weeks away in Europe The gate 1 river cruise was wonderful. The boat a little tried but the staff, crew & cruise director & guides were absolutely fantastic We could not fault anything The mix of Aussies, Canadians & Americans were a great bunch of people & everyone got on & we never had a problem with waiting for anyone which is usually The food was fantastic alway too much but you didn't have to eat all of it. Chef was a great guy, as was the Captain. Very approachable & knowable Lorin our cruise guide for the green team was so,so good. So much knowledge & history of the area we cruised & the beautiful old towns. He normally looks after the French rivers & if we ever did that area we would ask to be on his boat. That how good he was & had a great sense of humour Thank you Gate 1 for a very well organised 16 day cruise

We had an amazing trip! I can't tell you how impressed I was....from the hotel accommodations, the beautiful ship, our tour restaurants in Cesky Krumlov (Cave) and Salzburg (Monestary) were beyond our expectations, and most importantly our tour guide, Soma from Hungary was the best . For someone who is so young, he showed immense maturity and his knowledge and passion of all the ports and historical background was quite impressive. He had a great sense of humour and a lot of patience dealing with the varied age groups. Annick and Barbara were the guides who joined us on the boat and together they complemented each other so well and also worked seamlessly together. Our cabin steward was Kevin and he was most pleasant and attentive. We will definitely consider another Gate 1 river cruise or land tour. The crew of the ship were also great and we enjoyed the "talent show" that they put on for the guests. Our first Gate 1 trip......and it won't be our last

The Gate 1 Travel 16 day European River Cruise was absolutely fabulous! We had a brilliant time on the cruise, the staff, food, friends we made and the towns/cities we visited all contributed to our best European holiday ever and we have been traveling to European on a regular basis for more than 30 years. We will definitely undertake another holiday next year through your company!

We had a great trip. The crew and staff were fabulous. The tours were very well organized and implemented. Sabin, the waiter, was absolutely the best ever on all my sailings. He made a point of knowing all his passengers, their desires, and made each feel special. And, he was always helpful to the other waiters when they needed it. The 3 cruise directors were all excellent, especially, Mick, the head of the 3. Very knowledgeable and well planned. I was especially impressed with the silly ways they were able to host entertainment in the evenings. Always creative. It's nice to learn you opened in Australia. Guessing about 80% of the passengers were from there. All very friendly and interesting. Thank you for the opportunity. I am still a great fan of Gate 1.

The trip was absolutely wonderful! Our first one with Gate 1 - first time ever to Europe, in fact - and could not have been better! Everything from transfers to our tour manager Julian and bus driver Willie to the towns and sights we visited to the hotels we stayed at were all first rate!! No complaints at all. My dad came from Germany, along with his family, as a teen so I have heard about Germany and wanted to go my entire life. This has been the trip of a lifetime for me!!! Still thinking back and remembering all we did! There will definitely be more trips with Gate 1 in our future and I have been telling friends, neighbors, and patients how happy we are and what a great trip it was. Gate 1 truly exceeded our expectations and gave us a wonderful time!

Sorry for the tardy reply, we were in Europe for quite a while and our trip culminated in a 10 day hike around Mont Blanc so we only had limited access to emails etc. We were extremely pleased with the Gate1 River Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam - having never heard of the company prior to booking. There is no doubt we will be looking for more travel opportunities with Gate1 as we felt that it was very good value for money (as did the majority of Americans who we met on the cruise). We were on board the "Sound of Music" and it was very comfortable - one thing that had been putting us off booking river cruise (beside the possibility of sea sickness) was having to get dressed up for dinner every night etc. We found the relaxed atmosphere of this boat very much to our liking (and the cabin was fabulous).

We are home and all was amazing on the trip. Special mentions should go out to the catering staff, as the food was way above our expectations. The shore excursions were great as expected. Well organized and friendly tour guides. (Jean was our "red group" leader and did a fantastic and entertaining job) The ship was clean (being less than a year old) and there seemed to be a genuine pride in working on the Gate 1 Monarch Empress from the captain to the cabin stewards. The onboard activities were good and Saber tried to keep everyone who wanted to be involved .... busy!! We have already talked to friends about the great trip, and hopefully will book another trip.
