Know Before You Book - High & Low Water

European river cruising has gained in popularity for very good reason. It's a relaxing and convenient way to experience Europe while enjoying the comfort of a deluxe ship. However, before making the decision to reserve your vacation, please be aware of potential conditions which may impact your cruise. While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On very rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. These events typically occur with little or no notice. In the event that a cruise is partially or completely impacted, the itinerary will be operated by deluxe motor coach, accompanied by a Tour Manager, with overnights in hotels. The itinerary will include as many of the originally scheduled sightseeing features as possible, considering the travel time and distances required, as well as meals. While it is not possible to recreate the more leisurely comforts of sailings, we will endeavor to provide a comparable itinerary. These alternative services will be provided at no additional charge.

Entry Requirements:
Passengers traveling abroad require a passport valid for six months beyond their travel dates. All travelers are responsible to check if a visa is required for all countries on their itinerary. For visa information, check our Visas page.

Is This Trip Right for You?

This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. There is a potential for a small number of sailings to be impacted by river water levels, or other factors which may impact safe navigation. This may cause part or all of the cruise itinerary to be operated by motor coach and may also involve hotel accommodations.

We were very happy with our tour to Paris/Loire Valley and Normandy. Representatives at the airport were waiting for us when we arrived to take us to our hotel. All three hotels visited throughout our trip were extremely nice, clean and in the heart of where we were visiting. All meals provided by Gate 1 were both very good and in wonderful restaurants, especially our final meal as a group where we had an excellent meal with entertainment to end our tour with our other tour members. However what really makes a trip memorable is your tour guide and we had one of the best with Jennie. In our many travels, she was the best time manager we have ever experienced getting us to the tour sites with no waiting, beating the crowds and still allowing us plenty of time to enjoy the sites. She was extremely knowledgeable on site histories and had a wonderful sense of what was important to the group, this was especially evident when in Normandy making sure we visited the areas that our veterans met with such opposition during the landings. In addition to being a wonderful tour guide, she was wonderful assisting us in any questions, reservations or logistics that we had when on our personal time. All in all, Gate 1 did a great job and we would not hesitate taking more trips with your company.

Our trip was one of the most fantastic experiences we have ever had. Our guide (Simeon) was very charming and knowledgeable about all of the locations we visited on the trip. From hotel check in to tickets for entry to side tours, all was handled ahead of time to move our group along in a hassle free enjoyable trip. From Simeon marking our maps to get us around town on our free time to head counts and making sure all were accounted for. We will definitely use Gate 1 again, possibly as soon as next year for a trip to Spain or the Canadian Rockies. I am spreading the word on your behalf of how Gate 1 can make a dream trip become THE trip of a lifetime.

We had a wonderful time. This trip was very special since we were celebrating our 50 wedding anniversary. When we got married we could not afford a honeymoon, so we took this perfect trip to celebrating our 50 year late Honeymoon. The tour was perfect for us as I am an artist and a retired art teacher. We were able to visit places that I have only dreamed about: Monet's Garden, house and lily ponds, Leonardo De Vinci's Amboise house and workshop, and Vincent Van Gogh's Arles and St. Paul's Asylum. We also wanted to see Paris, Mont St Michel, the Normandie coast, Tours with its chateaux, cathedrals, Avignon, Nice Monaco, and the Mediterranean Sea. This trip was perfect! Great weather, great food, great traveling companions and especially Siméon, our tour guide/manager. He brought history and locations alive. Great personality and good humor. Enjoyed this whole experience! Thank you Gate 1! Looking forward to traveling with you again, maybe next year.

It was a very good trip. The group size was ideal. Seeing and tasting along the French countryside was perfect. My favorite was the Bordeaux countryside dinner (optional tour). But to stroll through the many small towns was interesting at best. The flexibility and free time were a plus. I cannot praise our tour director, Craig, enough. He was organized, thorough, focused and always kept the group together. He was so thorough in relating the histories, and background information of all our sights was the best. He was always prepared, patient, and his little touches of serving local aperitifs and treats were a delight. He was always approachable and had a great attitude. I highly recommend this tour and Gate 1 to friends and family.

Our trip to France was excellent in large part due to a great Tour Manager, Simeon. He provided wonderful insight to French history and culture and offered great suggestions for things to do and where to eat. Fortunately with our arrival the weather broke and we had primarily partly sunny to sunny days throughout our tour. The itinerary was excellent, the accommodations were great and the professionalism of the Tour Manager, local guides and motor coach drivers was fantastic. My wife and I are already starting to plan our next Gate 1 Tour for 2017.

It was fantastic. We can't say enough nice things about our guide, Ginny. She was very informative, friendly, and helpful. Although it rained everyday of the tour, we took it in stride and did not deter from our enjoyment. The hotels were nice, the bus was comfortable, food was great, and the other tourists were fun to be with. Our next tour will certainly be Gate 1! Thanks for a wonderful trip! The bus driver, Phillipe, was a great guy and careful driver!

We were a party of 8 family members traveling together celebrating graduations and anniversaries. Our trip was amazing, showcasing the major sights in Paris, Tours, Bayeau, and Giverny. The northern countryside offered a relaxed step backward in time at the vineyards and châteaus. Normandy was a beautiful but sobering memorial for us (Americans). Mount St Michel and Claude Monet's gardens were as interesting as lovely. Versailles was a breathtaking understanding behind the French revolution. Our tour guide was Jamil who was a wonderful mentor with a humorous touch. He made our anniversary celebration very special. Our group ranged from ages 19 to 76 and this tour accommodated everyone's interests. The food was delicious, the company special, and the other 31 participants were fun to befriend. The only thing I would have added would have been a short evening excursion to the Louvre. We were well pleased with Gate 1. Thank you!

Our tour manager, Jamil, was wonderful. He was so knowledgeable, kind and helpful throughout the trip. One of the areas of the tour was Normandy and in our group was a WWII veteran named Henry. It was so nice to have shared this visit with him and his family. At the American Cemetery, Jamil made a special moment for Henry so we as a group could thank him for his service and we sang the National Anthem. Actions like this make a outstanding tour manager. This was my second trip with Gate 1. Looking forward to another.

It was great, very enjoyable; we had a very good group. Most of the hotel accommodations were decent with easy access to town centers. Our tour director, Jean was very good; he is very experienced, detail oriented, provides a lot of interesting local & national history of France and current affairs. He worked very hard to try to give us the best traveling experience in his country.

Amazing! Breathtaking! Romantic! Incredible! Did I say amazing? Beautiful, bustling Paris; a high-speed train adventure; a medieval town high in the French Alps; a bus trip along the Mediterranean Sea to the glittering lights of Monte Carlo! I cannot thank Gate 1 Travel enough for putting together such a wonderful trip. From the flights; to the hotels; to the included stops; the optional excursions; the train; the bus driver, Rene; the tour guide…all top notch! Especially, our guide, Jenny. Jenny was wonderful…a treasure Gate 1 should hold onto! So informative and organized, and a beautiful personality. She really knows her stuff and you could tell she enjoyed it…I never thought I’d learn so much on vacation! I’m already planning my next vacation with Gate 1! I am happily posting this review online!

We had a wonder trip to Paris! Our air travel went off without a hitch and all of our flights were on time and as expected. Our stay in Paris was wonderful. Our hotel was quite comfortable and modern. We didn't spend much time there but the time we did was nice. The free buffet daily breakfast was very good and saved us a ton of money. Thanks to Gate 1 Travel for your help in making this vacation a wonderful experience.

It was another great Gate 1 trip. The Monarch Empress was all it was touted to be. The crew, dining room staff and housekeeping staff were all totally dedicated to making our trip as pleasant as possible. The food was excellent for each meal. We met a lot of interesting people and enjoyed the company immensely. The tours were all very informative and worth the effort plus the weather was great for all the tours. Glad we took the trip.

We loved it!!! I was worried about the location of our cabin as it was right next to the dining room, but it turned out fine. Everything worked pretty much like clockwork. The tours and tour directors were wonderful. We did the tour to Brugges and thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, we were especially happy with time enough to be on our own to explore. Most all the local guides were very informative and friendly. The hearing devices helped make each tour very special. Food was great. I don't eat meat so I was glad to see the fish on the menu. Having oatmeal, fruit and vegetables everyday was a nice plus. Nice variety of food. The servers in the lounge as well as the dining room were exceptional. They made each experience very pleasurable. The crew show was lots of fun. They did a great job. Yes, I would recommend Gate 1 to my friends. I am also planning to book more trips with Gate1 in the future. Thank you Gate 1!!!

Our trip was wonderful. We loved touring Iceland on our way to Amsterdam for the tulip cruise, which was fabulous. The weather, the Dutch and Flemish towns, and of course the tulips were gorgeous. So glad Gate 1 had the Monarch Empress built. It was delightful to come "home" to. The crew and the guides were so good and accommodating. Special kudos to Rudy with his wealth of knowledge and humor. He even took us on an evening crawl in Rotterdam, not on the schedule. This was our 8th tour with Gate 1. More to come.

Another wonderful Gate 1 trip. Paris was beautiful and I've picked up a slight French accent from our terrific tour guide, Marie. It was great being on the Monarch Empress. Everything was so clean and new and the crew was very accommodating. We thoroughly enjoyed our cruise through Belgium and the Netherlands. In addition to the iconic windmills and gorgeous tulips, there were so many interesting places to see and local foods and drinks to try!

Thank you. I absolutely loved France, and particularly Paris. I guess I never believed the hype that it was a beautiful and romantic city, and yet I discovered it truly was--and is now my most beloved city in the world! I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to have done this particular package because it was more than just Paris, including Normandy, Mont Saint-Michel and the Loir Valley...all places for which France is famed but not everyone gets out to see. It was a lot to cram into a trip, but in travelling so far, it is best to make the most to experience everything one can in the time there. I studied French in school, picking it as my second language of study because it sounded so elegant to my ear, and my lessons were integrated with anecdotes about French history, culture, and geography in both high school and college. The places we visited thus had a ring of familiarity to me by such association, and it's gratifying that I've now actually seen and experienced them! I understand from our tour guide Ann (who was excellent) that Gate 1 offers a tour package of the south of France and Monaco, and I think I'd be interested in doing that someday, as northern France (particularly Normandy) had pretty nasty weather (c'est la vie, as the French say!). Bring on the sunshine in the Riviera and lavender fields of Provence!

The Paris ,northern France trip was wonderful. Our tour guide Ann was fabulous and made it a truly wonderful experience. We saw more and learned more about Paris and the great sites we visited, than we could have ever done on our own. Ann was the best, and our driver Frank was always there for us. Thanks for a great trip Gate 1

The trip was great.  Our hotel room was small, even compact, but it was clean, very well located and the staff was extremely helpful. This is what we hoped for when we selected that hotel.

Both the air and the ground transportation arranged were efficient and on time. We have traveled with Gate 1 in the past and will continue to rely on your good service in the future.

The trip was so much better than I could have imagined!  Everything went smoothly and, better than that, our tour guide, EDO, was wonderful and made everything interesting and informative, made everyone on the journey feel equally important and maintained a sense of relaxed enthusiasm which was then shared by all of us. Our rooms were great, our "official" dinners were wonderful and were in colorful and interesting places. Our driver was competent and skilled.  He was also unfailingly good humored and calm. Thank you so very much, Ahmad, for helping me plan for this wonderful trip and thank your company for me for making everything so memorable. Bravo to you all.

Our trip to France with Gate 1 was wonderful in every way.

Our guide, Anne, made it so. She was professional, knowledgeable and quite humorous. Everything was perfect. My daughter, Nora, and I were very impressed by her.

Seeing Normandy and the Landing Beaches were the highlights of the tour. Mont St Michel was extraordinary and I am so glad that I was able to make the climb to the top. The view of the bay was just awesome! Giverny and Monet's gardens were so beautiful as was Paris, of course.

My daughter and I are looking forward to traveling again with Gate 1, next time to visit the south of France.

My trip was great. It was my first time going to Europe, and I had a lot of fun. Anne is a great tour manager. I learned a lot about French histories, cuisines, and cultures. Rick is also a great driver. I don't think I can drive on those narrow roads in the countryside.

Thank you. I would definitely choose Gate 1 again in the future if I plan to visit other parts of Europe.

The trip was great!

Everything went smoothly, our fellow travelers were a nice group, and we loved our guide, Simeon. We learned a lot about France's history. I've been to France a number of times before, but the D-Day beaches, Amboise, Bayeux, and Giverny were new to me and I loved them all.

My teenaged daughter had a great time too and especially loved Mont St. Michel and the D-Day beaches. A great value and I will recommend this tour to my friends and family.

The trip to France was Absolutely wonderful! Truly a trip of a lifetime! We saw so much! Among my favorites were Paris  (of course!) and Giverney where Monet's home and gardens were! All the flowers were in bloom! It was beautiful! Normandy was so touching and humbling- I did not know the American cemetery is considered American soil! The French Riviera and Nice were beyond words! I feel so fortunate to have seen all this with the most amazing weather AND the most wonderful tour guide Jenny!  She was a gem - caring, organized, friendly and so knowledgeable on all the history!  The other people on the trip with us were just terrific too! The chanenceaux and Chamborg castles and Mont St Michele - all amazing !

Thank you to gate 1 for this marvelous trip - I have many memories that will last a Lifetime!
