Know Before You Book - High & Low Water

European river cruising has gained in popularity for very good reason. It's a relaxing and convenient way to experience Europe while enjoying the comfort of a deluxe ship. However, before making the decision to reserve your vacation, please be aware of potential conditions which may impact your cruise. While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On very rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. These events typically occur with little or no notice. In the event that a cruise is partially or completely impacted, the itinerary will be operated by deluxe motor coach, accompanied by a Tour Manager, with overnights in hotels. The itinerary will include as many of the originally scheduled sightseeing features as possible, considering the travel time and distances required, as well as meals. While it is not possible to recreate the more leisurely comforts of sailings, we will endeavor to provide a comparable itinerary. These alternative services will be provided at no additional charge.

Entry Requirements:
Passengers traveling abroad require a passport valid for six months beyond their travel dates. All travelers are responsible to check if a visa is required for all countries on their itinerary. For visa information, check our Visas page.

Is This Trip Right for You?

This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. There is a potential for a small number of sailings to be impacted by river water levels, or other factors which may impact safe navigation. This may cause part or all of the cruise itinerary to be operated by motor coach and may also involve hotel accommodations.

It was another great Gate 1 trip. The Monarch Empress was all it was touted to be. The crew, dining room staff and housekeeping staff were all totally dedicated to making our trip as pleasant as possible. The food was excellent for each meal. We met a lot of interesting people and enjoyed the company immensely. The tours were all very informative and worth the effort plus the weather was great for all the tours. Glad we took the trip.

We loved it!!! I was worried about the location of our cabin as it was right next to the dining room, but it turned out fine. Everything worked pretty much like clockwork. The tours and tour directors were wonderful. We did the tour to Brugges and thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, we were especially happy with time enough to be on our own to explore. Most all the local guides were very informative and friendly. The hearing devices helped make each tour very special. Food was great. I don't eat meat so I was glad to see the fish on the menu. Having oatmeal, fruit and vegetables everyday was a nice plus. Nice variety of food. The servers in the lounge as well as the dining room were exceptional. They made each experience very pleasurable. The crew show was lots of fun. They did a great job. Yes, I would recommend Gate 1 to my friends. I am also planning to book more trips with Gate1 in the future. Thank you Gate 1!!!

Our trip was wonderful. We loved touring Iceland on our way to Amsterdam for the tulip cruise, which was fabulous. The weather, the Dutch and Flemish towns, and of course the tulips were gorgeous. So glad Gate 1 had the Monarch Empress built. It was delightful to come "home" to. The crew and the guides were so good and accommodating. Special kudos to Rudy with his wealth of knowledge and humor. He even took us on an evening crawl in Rotterdam, not on the schedule. This was our 8th tour with Gate 1. More to come.

Another wonderful Gate 1 trip. Paris was beautiful and I've picked up a slight French accent from our terrific tour guide, Marie. It was great being on the Monarch Empress. Everything was so clean and new and the crew was very accommodating. We thoroughly enjoyed our cruise through Belgium and the Netherlands. In addition to the iconic windmills and gorgeous tulips, there were so many interesting places to see and local foods and drinks to try!

Both of our trips were excellent. We really enjoyed the Sound of Music riverboat.  The staff could not have been better.  Our guide, Tony was excellent full of all types of information.  The weather also cooperated.

Our room was well tended and we did enjoy the wine with dinner and the happy hour.

The only suggestion can make for a change is for Gate 1 to get a machine like the cruise ships use to automatically sign people in and out of the boat.  It was a hassle remembering to turn in your room card for a shore card and then the same thing in reverse when we returned.  This is only a logistics inconvenience.

Both my husband and I felt the itinerary was well suited for most everyone.  And we really appreciated the quick town tours the tour guides provided when we had a few spare hours.

The trip was nice and most went well.  This was the first cruise for the ship so when we arrived early, they let us check in to our room immediately.  We were pleasantly surprise when the purser checking us in gave us an A cabin and told us  Gate 1 had upgraded our room because we had taken so many trips with you.  Thank you very much for this.  It was very nice to have a room with the French Balcony.

Gate 1 provided a shuttle for the early arrivals to go into Amsterdam on their own.  This too, was a nice option that was unexpected.  The cruise directors were very good.  The crew of the Sound of Music we extremely nice and accommodating.  They really made the trip special.  Always friendly and smiling.  I never heard anyone complaining about the crew.  The food on the ship was also great.  Everything was delicious and plentiful.

The itinerary was nice.  Not too fast and generally we had time to do what we wanted at each stop.  All of the local guides were knowledgeable and attentive.  I really liked Ghent and Kinderdijk.

The ship as whole was nice and we liked that it was smaller than many of the ships we saw.  As noted above, the service and quality was nice.  Drinks were not outrageously priced and the happy hour each day was a plus.  We also enjoyed the free WIFI.  It took a couple of days for the crew to get it working properly.  They brought in a IT person who apparently resolved the issue and it worked great on the rest of the trip.

The only issue we had ended up being with our room.  It had a bit of a musty smell that the crew could not figure out.  The carpet near the balcony door also became wet which may have been part of the odor issue.  The wind blew really hard and we had a lot of rain.  That may have contributed to the wet carpet.  Since it was the first trip, the crew probably were not aware of the problem prior to the trip.   The crew tried to hard to resolve the issue and even gave us a bottle of champagne to make up for the problem.

All in all we had a nice trip and a great time.  Another successful trip with Gate 1.

Our trip on the MS Sound of Music was great.  The ship staff and the services they provided were the best.  All of the staff was friendly and very attentive.  Karla was our Gate 1 representative and she too was excellent.  The only negative I could think of was the ship was a little dated and in need of a upgrade.

On another note, I was pleased to read that Gate 1 Travel will have their own river boat in 2016. We have been happy with all of the trips have taken with Gate 1 Travel.  This is the 18th or 19th trip we have Gate 1. I would love to have someone verify the number trips we have taken with your company. Mostafa has always been my go to guy to book our trips. He does a wonderful job.

We had a great trip on the Sound of Music and it was great to see the crew again as we were on the same ship last year on the Danube cruise.  It was great to see Captain Peter, Judit, Crestian, Sylvia and Augustan and all the rest of the crew.  The weather was not great at times and it was cold, windy and wet.  But that didn't stop us from doing things.  Some of the waterways we were on had whitecaps.

Paris was great as was Amsterdam and Brussels. The weather meant that the tulips in the fields were late coming out and we didn't see rows of different colours as we had hoped.  Thanks again for your help in booking.

The trip was great. Never enough time on these cruises, but this gave us a great overview so we know what we want to go back and further explore. This is our 3rd river cruise. France had the best wine and cheese, but this one had the best food. Also, Amadeus Elegant was the newest ship we have been on and it definitely showed it in the quality of the accommodation.

The trip was awesome...Gate 1 picked a fabulous cruise ship. Their cruise director did a great job of taking care of the details. It was unusual for us to have Gate 1 just in the background (in case of any problems), but everything was done smoothly. The staff was awesome and couldn't do enough. We met three wonderful ladies at our table from Kentucky...either a trip for us to Kentucky or a trip to NY for the 3 of them is in our future. We all got along so well, everyone thought we came together. Great trip!!!

9 Day Holland & Belgium River Cruise - Amsterdam to Amsterdam (Brilliant), April 2013

We recently returned from Gate 1's River Cruise Trip, where we had a great time. Center city was within walking distance, of the docked ship, at all but once city. So those who chose not to join the optional tours, could have a great day touring the beautiful cities of the Netherlands and Belgium on their own. The ship, Amadeus Brilliant, was one of the nicest ships on the river (only 2 years old) and the rooms were surprisingly spacious.

As frequent sea cruisers, we were a little concerned about complimentary wine at dinner (leading to rowdy behavior), but were pleasantly surprised by the fact that our fellow travelers enjoyed the very good wine as a way to facilitate very enjoyable dinner conversations, which helped us form some very strong friendships on the cruise. Again, we had a great time, made some new close friends and got to see a beautiful part of Europe at a very affordable price. Thanks Gate 1!
