Know Before You Book - High & Low Water

European river cruising has gained in popularity for very good reason. It's a relaxing and convenient way to experience Europe while enjoying the comfort of a deluxe ship. However, before making the decision to reserve your vacation, please be aware of potential conditions which may impact your cruise. While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On very rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. These events typically occur with little or no notice. In the event that a cruise is partially or completely impacted, the itinerary will be operated by deluxe motor coach, accompanied by a Tour Manager, with overnights in hotels. The itinerary will include as many of the originally scheduled sightseeing features as possible, considering the travel time and distances required, as well as meals. While it is not possible to recreate the more leisurely comforts of sailings, we will endeavor to provide a comparable itinerary. These alternative services will be provided at no additional charge.

Entry Requirements:
Passengers traveling abroad require a passport valid for six months beyond their travel dates. All travelers are responsible to check if a visa is required for all countries on their itinerary. For visa information, check our Visas page.

Is This Trip Right for You?

This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. There is a potential for a small number of sailings to be impacted by river water levels, or other factors which may impact safe navigation. This may cause part or all of the cruise itinerary to be operated by motor coach and may also involve hotel accommodations.

We had a fantastic time. The River Cruise was amazing ... The cruise staff was so friendly, kind and helpful. They couldn’t do enough for us. The ship was filled with well traveled passengers so we asked around for favorite trips which we are keeping in our minds for future adventures. We would highly recommend this trip to anyone and now that we have experienced the intimacy of river cruising, we would do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks for touching base with us to see if we had a good trip. It was loads of fun. Michele Brown

I was in the travel industry for 31 years as a travel agent ... I feel well qualified to tell you that your company does a wonderful job for a very reasonable price ... I will say that Adrien Kiss the cruise director and Daniele the activities host did what I can only describe as a fantastic job ... Jason (of your meet and greet staff) assisted my traveling companion in retrieving a lost bag. He too did an excellent job. The attention to detail by the Gate 1 staff is extraordinary. I have been on numerous cruises ... and the staff on this one was just wonderful ... Adrien is a true gem and it is a credit to you that she is in your employ. We had a fantastic time. Thank you. We had a wonderful experience with Gate1. As we moved into Austria & Germany ... the Guides were very knowledgeable & made the history of each location come to life. Miklos Jaros worked tirelessly to be available at all times for questions or suggestions; he made sure everyone knew in advance what to expect, and when & where to assemble for every outing. He was a fountain of interesting information, and we were so very happy to have him come with us to Munich for the final days of our trip. Everyone on the Ship was friendly, pleasant & very helpful. They answered all our questions, engaged us in conversation, and when asked they were willing to share their story with us, so that we could learn about them & where they originated from. I will surely encourage Gate1 Travel among my friends & relatives. Regards, Joanne Erven

This river cruise down the Danube from Budapest to Prague was now one of our top three vacations ever. The picturesque towns we visited lent themselves so easily to photographs which was one of our major reasons for taking this particular river cruise. What made it even better was the attention to detail and service provided by Gate 1. At every juncture they made us feel almost like royalty; from the carefully planned tours to the transfers and chosen hotels to the unbelievable food service provided on board by Martin and his staff. Martin was particularly gracious every minute of our trip and it really made a difference. We are seasoned travelers and yet we were so impressed by Gate 1, that we have already decided that Gate 1 will plan our next vacation. Thank you so very much for making out trip such a delightful experience.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the river cruise. Your staff was superb, the cities at which we stopped were charming and the guides at each stop were terrific. While we had "below deck" accommodations we were very pleasantly surprised on the amount of light that entered the room and the overall design and cleanliness. I am very much looking forward to another opportunity to river-cruising with Gate 1 again.

We had the most amazing time! We have talked to many friends about our experience and how wonderful it really was. We lacked for nothing on this trip. We were so well cared for and entertained that this made the whole trip memorable. I have to say that the staff was exceptional. Sunny the bartender was so personable and really did his job well. The others on the ship did all they could to accommodate us. I wish I could remember all their names because they left a lasting impression on both myself and my husband. I asked my friends who were traveling with us what they remember the most, she commented as well on the staff. We both thought they were exceptional. I would certainly travel Gate 1 again and look forward to it.

The river trip on the Monarch Queen from Amsterdam to Budapest surpassed our expectations. Our room was very nice, the bed comfortable. The food was out of this world. All of the tour guides were right on with their facts (I was a World History teacher), connected things to our present day situations and were amusing. You can't for any better cruise director than Mick (Miklos) nor piano player than Peter. What a bang for the buck! Thanks for a wonderful time. We look forward to more travels with Gate 1.

It was the trip of a lifetime. I can't believe how friendly, informative, comfortable and well organized it was. Miklos, our Cruise Director, provided a wealth of historical and technical (locks and dams) information all along the way, bringing to life the richness of each location with colorful descriptions and tips about what to see. He kept all things organized which is impressive given the number of local guides and logistics (busses, tickets etc) at hand. Each night he prepared us with a talk for the next day. In between, he responded to the interests and needs of individual passengers. Our Entertainment Director, Amir, offered morning yoga and evening dance, games, and group activities that helped everyone have fun. Maitre d, Ivan, and all the dining room staff were delightful, responsive to individual diets, and served lovely meals with classy presentation. Our Hotel Director made sure all were welcomed and comfortable. Housekeeping was thorough, quick, and friendly. During meals we enjoyed the company of a diverse, fun, and interesting group. We chatted about our countries, cultures, and families. Did I mention drinking lots of good wine and local beers? I cannot emphasize enough what great service all provided on this spectacular trip. My only regret is that we had too little time in Vienna and Budapest. Thanks for your help on the front end and keep those trip brochures coming!

It was excellent, everything was first class and we were very well taken care of from start to finish. The hotels and tours were excellent, and the river cruise had excellent amenities, including great food and a comfortable lounge. We saw so many wonderful places. We definitely want to travel Gate 1 again and will recommend to all our friends.

After completing the Gate 1 trip, my travelling companion and I extended our travel and we are now in Berlin airport awaiting the long flight home to Sydney. Everything about the Gate 1 package was fabulous! It's certainly a well-oiled machine that assists guests in every way possible. The Monarch Empress, ALL of the staff, the excursions and local tour guides and tour managers could not be faulted. I hope to travel again with Gate 1 and have already recommended the company to friends and family who ate likely to travel.

Our trip was fantastic! There is not one thing we could recommend that would have made our trip anymore enjoyable. Your attention to details was faultless. The crew and all Gate 1 travel personnel went out of their way to insure our every needs and desires were taken care of prior to our need to ask. The food was gourmet quality, the variety was appreciated and the service was excellent! The pace and organization of the trip was perfect. The included tours at each stop covered all the important highlights and then the free time we had to do as we wished were in perfect balance. Our days were full without being rushed and of course we could opt out of anything we didn't want to do. We very much appreciated the option to stay in town for lunch and added free time rather than having to go back to the boat and go back with the group. This was our first trip with Gate 1. We met other couples who have taken up to 9 previous Gate 1 tours. We now understand why they choose Gate 1 and we'll follow in their footsteps!

We had a fantastic trip! We had previously done the 15-day land tour of (Romantic) Italy with Gate 1, but this was our first river cruise. The countryside along the Rhine is so beautiful, that any free time we spent viewing the scenery, whether from the upper deck or lounge, was a highlight of our cruise. We enjoyed sightseeing in the charming cities, villages, and towns, and the daily tour guides provided us with lots of information, each in their own unique style. The entire crew on the Monarch Baroness were outstanding and they all should be commended! They were friendly, cheerful, knowledgeable, extremely accommodating, and solicitous. They really helped to make our trip a memorable experience!! Our cabin was quite comfortable, despite its compact size; we thought it was great that there was actually room for a comfortable armchair near our French balcony, in addition to the desk chair. And, the public spaces on our river boat were kept immaculately clean. In short, we loved this trip - it was such a nice way to travel! In fact, I'm already starting to plan our next European river cruise for 2018 in my head! Thank you Gate 1 Travel. You never disappoint!!

The trip was wonderful. It was my fourth trip with Gate 1 and my first river cruise. River cruises are the way to go!! Everything went smoothly from the initial booking with Judith, to the flights and connections, to the cruise itself. We were pampered from the moment we stepped on board. The whole staff was very attentive and the cruise director, Soma, was unflappable as was the activity director, Amir, who had the most amazing energy. In Budapest, Adrien was most helpful and full of suggestions. I have been singing Gate 1's praises to anyone who will listen.

We absolutely loved our trip. The Monarch Empress was beautiful with well-planned spaces and an attentive, cheerful, well-trained crew. I highly recommend the Gate 1 Rhone River cruise. The boat, itinerary, tours, guides were all great. And the fact that we paid thousands less made it sweeter. The food was what I would expect on any cruise. So you can book it with confidence, and maybe even take it yourself!

The trip was great. We were very happy with every aspect of the cruise - particularly the tour directors (specially Herbert - a real champion!) who were outstanding. Peter, the Executive Chef and his team also produced superb meals and all the service and housekeeping staff were terrific - unfailingly friendly and incredibly helpful. Amelia's service and wine knowledge were impressive and Stefan's bar service (especially his bloody marys) was legendary. The Master and crew did a great job getting us through without falling prey to shallow and obstructed waterways. We'd happily very strongly recommend this cruise to anyone.

The hotel was lovely, the staff was friendly and sooooo helpful.. The tour guides both in Amsterdam, and on the trip were great. The ship and the crew were great.Enjoyed all the tours, and information about each location.. It was my first trip abroad, and first river cruise. We have returned home after 5 weeks away in Europe The gate 1 river cruise was wonderful. The boat a little tried but the staff, crew & cruise director & guides were absolutely fantastic We could not fault anything The mix of Aussies, Canadians & Americans were a great bunch of people & everyone got on & we never had a problem with waiting for anyone which is usually The food was fantastic alway too much but you didn't have to eat all of it. Chef was a great guy, as was the Captain. Very approachable & knowable Lorin our cruise guide for the green team was so,so good. So much knowledge & history of the area we cruised & the beautiful old towns. He normally looks after the French rivers & if we ever did that area we would ask to be on his boat. That how good he was & had a great sense of humour Thank you Gate 1 for a very well organised 16 day cruise
