Passengers returning from Moscow on Day 12 should select flights that depart no earlier than 8:00 am.

Entry Requirements:
Passengers traveling abroad require a passport valid for six months beyond their travel dates. All travelers are responsible to check if a visa is required for all countries on their itinerary. For visa information, check our Visas page.

Is This Trip Right for You?

This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking during included sightseeing. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. Shore excursions are available to purchase locally on board the cruise.

We enjoyed our Russia and Eastern Europe trip very much. Lots of rain & cold weather in Romania which we were told was unusual for this time of year. All in all, everyone made the best of it. Best guide we have ever had on any trip was Radu. Most caring, knowledgeable, humorous and everyone just loved him!! He made the trip an event to remember!!

The Russian River Cruise trip has absolutely highlighted the essence of Russia, introducing me to the country's history, beauty, and culture. The itinerary offered a great perspective in comparing and contrasting the uniqueness of Russia's major cities with the small villages/towns. The excursions, optional tours (especially the two folk dance shows: Bagatitsa in St. Petersburg and Kostroma in Moscow), and the special ship's activities (learning the country’s language, songs, and dance) have certainly been instrumental in authenticating the richness of the Russian culture. Furthermore, the local guides did a great job in giving tourists a detailed insight of their city/village--past and present. As for the MS Zosima Shashkov, the room was clean, the staff was friendly and accommodating, the food was fine, and the musicians were enjoyable, even though I felt that a variety of entertainment was needed. Hiring young on-board guides to assist the tour managers was a wonderful idea because these young personnel were personable, full of fun and energy, and established a positive rapport with the passengers. Overall, this trip was extremely educational and enjoyable. Thank you!

I had no idea that when we booked with Gate 1, that we would be treated so royally. Our Russian River Cruise was a surprise from the beginning. It was a LONG taxi ride from the centre of St Petersburg to get to the ship, and I was SO happy when I saw that it was there. At this time, I did not know about the high standard of Gate 1 tours. When we boarded, we had information in our cabins about meeting with the Gate 1 travel agent. WOW! Our own travel agent??? And what a fine person she is. Tanya ‘made’ our trip. The Gate 1 group really bonded. Not that we didn’t interact with the French, the Italians, and the Hungarians, but by eating together, bussing together, and touring together, we became a cohesive group. My previous experience in cruising was on a BIG ship with people from everywhere. It was like living in a small city. We would meet people in passing, but there was no coordination. No personal touch. The other positive aspect of this experience was in hearing people talk about their previous Gate 1 tours. Everyone spoke so highly of the company. When flying home, I happened to be sitting beside a woman who had just come off the Budapest cruise, and she, too, spoke highly of her experience. It was her second tour with you. I have not been too big on organized tours. My sister and I like to rent a car and explore. However, we thoroughly enjoyed the river cruise. We saw places that we could not have reached by car. The local guides were really informative, too. Over all, 10+. I am SO glad that we happened to find your advertisement online. Would I recommend Gate 1? Most definitely! Would I book again with Gate 1? I think so. We had three weeks of ‘exploring’ the Balkans before joining the Russian River Cruise. It made a really good balance.

The trip was amazing. I think it blew everyone's expectations. Tanya the Gate 1 representative and the 2 helpers she had from Vodohod (Maria and Karina) were out of this world. The staff on the boat was amazing and the accommodations (I'm not gonna lie I was weary about them) turned out to be great. The food was delicious with enough variety for every taste. We truly enjoyed the onboard entertainment as well. they offered many different things to keep us busy. It's no wonder Gate 1 has such a strong following. You guys really know what you're doing and truly are customer focused. Thanks so much to Gate 1 for offering the trip and always patiently answering all my questions when I would call. You guys ROCK!!!! I look forward to the next adventure with Gate 1's help.

My wife and I had a wonderful trip/river cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow. The various stops along the way were tremendous; very historic and beautiful. The Russia tour with Gate 1 has given us a more positive perspective about Russia and the people of Russia. Not only is the country beautiful and historic, but the people were very friendly toward Americans. We have traveled to a lot of different countries on various tours; but, we feel this was our best trip yet. Good job Gate 1.

The trip was wonderful. Thank-you to all the Gate 1 staff for making everything run so smoothly. A special thanks to Zoltan and Katya who went above and beyond to take care of us. Russia is beautiful and all the excursions were fun and informative. The ship was clean and well maintained and was a pleasant surprise for a 3 star rating. Will definitely use Gate 1 again.

We had a wonderful time. Russia sure changed from the last time I was there in 1969. Everyone from Gate 1 and the boat crew were the best! We really lucked out with perfect weather every day. All the tour guides were excellent , interesting and well informed. The pace of the trip was good and the ship activities were fun.

It was great, it exceeded our expectations. This ship was clean and well maintained and the staff was so courteous, happy and helpful. The food and drinks were top notch as well. Plenty to do onboard, got involved in almost every activity they had, it was fun, from the history lessons to the Russian dance lessons. The places we toured were interesting and well organized. No problem understanding the guides, who were very well informed, specially the one in Moscow. I must say that we did not spend much time in Moscow, one day/night only, not nearly enough. On the other hand, St Petersburg was awesome! Once again Gate 1 Travel delivered a great, affordable and unforgettable vacation, we were well taking care of by Ludmila, throughout our entire trip. Thanks Gate 1 Travel for another great travel experience, by demand, our friends are getting all your information. And thanks, Alan for suggesting the cabin upgrade, it was perfect.

My trip to Russia was wonderful. I loved the Russian ship we cruised, it's staff, the places we visited, I loved the history of Russian and its people, so much natural city beauty. The Russian people suffered much and yet we were welcomed so well. Thank you for the work that Gate 1 Travel does to help us travelers explore interesting places. Ah, and the food was great.

We thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Russia. Our tour guide, Ludmilla, was a sweetheart! The crew in the boat, esp. Arthur-Tour Boat Guide, could not be any better. Food in the boat was very good. Entertainment great. Transfers no problem. Radisson Palace Hotel in St. Petersburg had a nice room for us & the breakfast was superb. Kudos to Gate 1 Travel! We’ll do another one in the future.

Alethea, it was fantastic. The boat crew kept the boat in top notch condition, the Russian people were great, the sites and agenda were just the right amount and we can't say enough about Tanya as the tour director. You better hang on to that one. Thanks for a trip of a lifetime.

We have nothing but rave reviews for our trip, from Gate 1 Travel to Novohod to the crew to the local guides!

1. Accommodations and destinations were very accurately described so we were plenty prepared for what to expect.

2. Our greeter at the airport was very easy to find.

3. The local guides you provided were excellent, especially Olga in St. Petersburg who provided us with great cultural overviews during some of our bus trips.

4. Zoltan, our cruise manager, and Elena, our group leader, were outstanding .. always going over and above the call of duty in making sure communications were clear and that guests needs were promptly attended to.  Everything ran very smoothly.

5. Bus transportation was very comfortable.

6. As there was a good amount of time on the river boat, I expected to get some reading done.  Not so, as there were plenty of activities going on.

7. Entertainment was top notch!  We especially enjoyed Tamara, who performed nightly (what an amazing voice!) and Ludmilla's music trio (with their cultural attire and musical talents on the Balalaika and Accordion).

8. Food was terrific and portions were just right.

9. Transportation back to the airport was very well organized .. it was comforting to be accompanied right up to the proper ticket counter.

I would not hesitate to use Gate 1 Travel again .. well done!

Everything was great.  When we arrived in Moscow, we called the transfer folks for the Riverboat Cruise and they picked us up at our hotel for our transfer.  That was the only outstanding issue.  The Raddison was a great hotel, everyone spoke great English, and the food was also great.  All tours provided were interesting and informative.

12 Day Russian River Cruise - St Petersburg to Moscow, May 2014
Dummy Image

We have just returned from our Russian River Cruise, and we would recommend this tour, as it is great value for money.

To start, we had a stopover in Dubai which was great, and well needed after a 14 hour flight from Brisbane. We organised a tour with Arabian Adventures and went to the Palms, Atlantis Hotel with its massive aquarium, ride on a monorail and visited the huge 1500 shop Dubai Mall where we watched the magnificent water features played to music.

The next day we arrived in St. Petersburg, Russia. Gate 1 were at the airport and the first group we saw when we arrived (we had arrived 1 hour early). In all about 20 people were collected at the airport (brand new and only opened 1 week) before being driven to the Port and to our ship. Rooms were on the small side but plenty of storage and very clean. Cleaned thoroughly every day. There were 98 staff on board looking after the 200 guests, so we all were well looked after.

Gate 1 had the whole of the restaurant on the 3rd level for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plenty of food - buffet style for breakfast and pre-ordered for lunch and dinner. 4 courses for lunch and 3 for main meal at night with a free drink included. There was salad, soup, main and dessert for lunch and soup, main and dessert for dinner. Choices for all including vegetarian.

Plenty of entertainment at night on board, dancing upstairs in one of the bars and also a talent show, staff performances and in another bar piano music or the movie "War and Peace" with an episode each night. Also, bingo and Russian history lessons, language lessons and dancing. We also had a "pirate dress up night" - fun. A Russian night was arranged also with food and the staff performing Russian songs.

We cannot think of anything which we did not like. Maybe the crowded freeways in Moscow. But with 14 million people, our bus driver just took alternative routes. The scenery on the cruise was outstanding, so much water and pine trees, through 17 locks and many canals along the way. There were many Australians on the tour also from various parts of Australia. I know you organised many of their cruises as well.

The trip was excellent! Loved Russia, loved the Gate 1 crew on site to assist us throughout the trip. We met many other Gate 1 customers who have a number of prior trips with Gate 1. I think the winner was a couple from the Bay Area who were on their 14th Gate 1 excursion!

Our ship was spotless, and every staff member seemed to help to operate it with great pride. Our meals were delicious, and I was glad that they were not comprised of "American food". We loved the cruise atmosphere: enough time to take a leisurely nap; but more than enough on-board activities to keep us hopping if we wished.

This is the third time we have traveled with Gate 1; it will not be the last time! Thank you for a travel service that is top value for every dollar spent. We have made some beautiful memories that will be with us for a long time.

Our trip to Russia was fantastic! It was so well planned and the Gate 1 guides were great. We felt safe and well taken care of by all members of the crew on board as well. The food, the receptionist and the cleaning staff served us so well. We definitely will consider Gate 1 for our next trip. And Russia is just lovely - the little towns added to the grand cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Thank you for your good support!!

This was the absolutely BEST tour we have ever taken! The Gate 1 personnel and the shipboard personnel were all professional, caring, committed and extremely helpful in every instance. They all contributed greatly to making this a memory of a lifetime trip! Special recognition must go to Ludmilla, our Gate 1 trip coordinator and to Yulia Romanova, our shipboard tour guide! Outstanding local tour guides and a reasonably priced list of side trips also contributed greatly to our overall enjoyment of this tour!

It was wonderful! We had a combination of being busy and taking in so much history and culture and then having a chance to relax and enjoy the cruise. Tanya was the best guide I've ever experienced. Our trip to Russia was wonderful! Though I had trepidations about the ship, MS Zosima Shashkov, due to its age, the ship was well conditioned, clean and comfortable. We found the crew to be friendly and accommodating, especially your Gate 1 guide, Tanya. She is most certainly your greatest asset on the ship!! The only suggestion we have for Vodohod is to allot more time in shore excursions. In so doing, passengers would have a greater opportunity to get to know the local communities.

Thank you for an affordable opportunity to experience the world!!

The 12 day Russian River cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg with Gate 1 was a 10. The tour guides at the various stops were exceptional, intelligent, super friendly, helped with shopping, patient, happy to tell us all they knew about Russia and its people, etc. And of course the palaces in St. Petersburg were beyond splendid. As a world traveler, the most glorious we've toured. This was our 6th Gate 1 trip. We love the way we are met at the airport.

Our riverboat the MS Zosima Shashkov was clean and adequate. The concert pianist and the russian Balalaika guitar player who entertained in the bar in the evening with Russian classical and folk music. We highly recommend this trip. We are left with fond memories.

The river trip in Russia was great. As usual, Gate 1 took great care of us, had someone meet us at the airport, and took us to the river boat. The cabins were small but efficient and clean. The crew was friendlly and did a good job. Our guide and her asssistant were great.

We had manyexcursions included, and took a few other optional things. We did some things on our own, and both our guide and the ship crew were helpful. Things were offered but not pushed. The food was not gourmet, but pretty good for a small kitchen on a river boat, and a taste of Russian cuisine which was what we looked forward to, and the service was good. We like a compromise of local and American food when we travel. We came home tired but glad we did it. I highly recommend it.

We enjoyed it immensely. The ship was much better than we anticipated. The room was small, but the beds were comfortable and the bathroom was quite adequate. The food was much better than we expected. The tours were also very well done. Some of them were a little longer than we would have liked, but all were very well done. Our guide, Tanya, was absolutely great! We could not have had a better guide! All-in-all a very good trip at a great value!

Absolutely positively the best trip we've had...fantastic guide Tanya, best guide of all of our Gate 1 trips. Wonderful itinerary! Packed, but paced beautifully. The ship had tight quarters, but adequate room. They had wonderful service in every area and great food. We had an interesting Gate 1 group, but all very well travelled with Gate 1. This has us considering trips we hadn't before. We're satisfied customers.

The trip was excellent. We enjoyed Tanya, our Russian tour guide, the other staff on board and in local places. We learned a lot about Russia through the visits, lectures and films provided and
enjoyed our fellow Gate 1 travelers. The ship was clean, and the food was ample, interesting and tasty. As Gate 1 advised beforehand, the cabin was small, but comfortable.

The value for the money was good. This was our second Gate 1 trip and we look forward to future opportunities.

The trip was excellent, all we expected and more. The flights were on time, the ship crew was superb and the Gate 1 manager, Tanya, was attentive, helpful and sincerely interested in our well being. All and all, I would recommend the trip to everyone who wishes to see both the urban and countryside of a small part of Russia. Thanks for everything and I look forward to using Gate 1 for our next adventure.

Everyone had an absolutely marvelous time. Everything that was included was wonderful. We can't say enough about our tour guide, Tanya. She was so helpful and delightful. We had more interaction with her, but the other guide, Zoltan, was very good and helpful as well. This is our 3rd trip on Gate 1 and we are definitely loyal clients.

We had a wonderful time. Tanya, the Gate 1 manager, was amazing in the way she kept track of all of the tours and each group as well as managing all of the arrangements for our arrivals and departures. The food was fabulous. We had excellent guides on our tours. The activities on the boats were varied and kept us entertained when we weren't touring. One friend traveling with me said that she thought this trip was the best she had ever taken. I can't think of anything that would have improved the trip.

My wife Chris and I had a wonderful time in our recent 13 day river cruise between Moscow and St Petersburg! All the plans went off flawlessly- even the weather cooperated as we had sunshine on all but 2 days!

We were very impressed with the sites we visited- the people, culture, history, and architecture there are exceptional. I took over 1,500 photographs to record our experience. Tanya, our tour guide aboard the MS Russ, kept us informed of each day's activities and also provided a lot of personal insight into modern day Russia. Many thanks to you and Gate 1 for your assistance in making our trip possible. We are already looking into our next opportunity to travel with Gate 1!

We had a great trip and had a wonderful time. The staff in Russia was excellent and gave us a good time and learning experience. Everyone on the ship from Gate1 really enjoyed their Vacation and I didn't hear any complaints what so ever.

The trip was great, actually much more than I expected. The ship was great and the food excellent, especially the breakfasts. The guides, except for one or two local guides, spoke English fluently and had amusing and in one case, learned personalities. The overall leader, Tanya, was terrific! Of course, there is never enough time at the remarkable sites but this just stimulates the wish to return. All in all, a wonderful trip.

My husband and I and our group of 10 other friends had a good time on our Russian River Cruise. We felt the itinerary was excellent. We had great local tour guides who spoke good English and had a wealth of knowledge. I personally, liked the Russian staff on the ship and Russian touches in the meals, the entertainment and in the ship itself, which I felt was an important part of being immersed in Russian culture and Russian sensibilities. It was refreshing not to be served by a staff made of people from around the world who do not represent the country they are in, not to be faced with a gluttony of food that would be wasted, and not have the American glitz that is so typical of the entertainment in ocean cruises.

I appreciated the personal Gate 1 touches with Tanya on board to oversee glitches, to answer our questions, to confirm our taxi rides with her phone calls in Russian (beyond the call of duty) and just to be a constant connection to all things Russian. We enjoyed all her talks on the ports we stopped at, her talk on Russian humor, etc. She was ready on the buses each time we take off to the different sites on the itinerary. She was an invaluable part of our experience, a friend in a land we knew nothing about.

Now we are home with good thoughts about Russia, all the intriguing places and the accompanying history, a handle on the pulse of this country, and the memories of all the wonderful people we met.

I am keeping an eye on other Gate 1 trips because I've enjoyed this one so much.

My wife and I had a wonderful time on your St. Petersburg to Moscow River Cruise. Your employees were excellent in attending to our every need. They made certain we made our excursions on time and we returned on time; i.e. waited until the last visitor was on board the bus or ship. The  personalities of the employees were outstanding -- always happy and  helpful. Our tour director, Tanya, was absolutely phenomenal! She spoke five-six languages, went to linguistic school, and so was able to meet every conversational requirement. The excursions were very interesting and informative. My favorite was, of course, the Nikulin Circus in Moscow. Everyone should see that. The only problem is that it was on our last day of the trip causing us to return late to the ship for a very early morning wakeup call (2:30 a.m.) in order to meet our bus to take us to the airport for a 7:00 am flight.

In the future, we will always seek Gate 1 as our first choice in travel needs. Thanks you so much for "hovering" over us like a mother hen to her chicks.

Our riverboat cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg was awesome! We would definitely recommend this trip to anyone. It was well worth the price we paid. The Aeroflot plane was new, clean, and high-tech. The Moscow customs area was a nightmare. Once outside the airport, things fell nicely into place. A Gate 1 representative was waiting for us to board a bus to the ship.

The ship, MS Russ, although older, is kept quite clean. The staff was always pleasant and helpful. Our tour director, Tanya, was fabulous. She was extremely helpful, friendly, and honest. Her assistant, Cate, was a sweet person as well. The food presentation was always excellent. The food quality was good, though it often tasted bland. There was enough variety to please everyone at our table. We were surprised to learn that we had to purchase drinking water, but again, not a big expense.
Moscow was beautiful. We wish we had been able to spend more time there. St. Petersburg was beautiful. We loved the included canal tour. We also enjoyed having time on our own after the Hermitage visit, so we could sample lunch at a local restaurant and climb the stairs at St. Isaac's for a panoramic view of the city.
We have already recommended this trip to friends. This was our second Gate 1 trip. No doubt there will be a third.

Our trip was great. I wanted to let you know about what a good job our tour director did. Her name was Tanya. She solved every problem large or small that came up. She was always pleasant and friendly and helpful. She is an asset to Gate 1 in Russia. All of the local guides were excellent as was the transportation.

We had a wonderful time! The ship was comfortable, the crew very professional, the tours and the stops on the cruise were so interesting and unusual, and St. Petersburg and Moscow--amazing!

Your help was important to making this a great experience, Cheryl--thanks again! I'm going to stick with Gate 1 whenever I find a trip you have that matches the destination I want, so we may be in touch again in the future.
