Know Before You Book - High & Low Water
European river cruising has gained in popularity for very good reason. It's a relaxing and convenient way to experience Europe while enjoying the comfort of a deluxe ship. However, before making the decision to reserve your vacation, please be aware of potential conditions which may impact your cruise. While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On very rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. These events typically occur with little or no notice. In the event that a cruise is partially or completely impacted, the itinerary will be operated by deluxe motor coach, accompanied by a Tour Manager, with overnights in hotels. The itinerary will include as many of the originally scheduled sightseeing features as possible, considering the travel time and distances required, as well as meals. While it is not possible to recreate the more leisurely comforts of sailings, we will endeavor to provide a comparable itinerary. These alternative services will be provided at no additional charge.
Passengers traveling abroad require a passport valid for six months beyond their travel dates. All travelers are responsible to check if a visa is required for all countries on their itinerary. For visa information, check our Visas page.

Is This Trip Right for You?
This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. There is a potential for a small number of sailings to be impacted by river water levels, or other factors which may impact safe navigation. This may cause part or all of the cruise itinerary to be operated by motor coach and may also involve hotel accommodations.

Begin the day with a scenic drive through the expanses of the Danube plains, to the city of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s former medieval capital. Tour the city that is one of the most picturesque places in Bulgaria, characterized by narrow cobbled lanes, medieval remains of fortifications and churches and an evocative handicraft market. Afterward, continue to the nearby historic village of Arbanasi, famous for its rich past and colorfully painted 15th century Church of the Nativity. Enjoy a typical Bulgarian lunch including local wine or beer.
Day #8 | 01 Sep 2019 - 31 Oct 2019 | $75.00 |

Head outside the capital and travel north towards Snagov Monastery. Visit the 15th century Christian-Orthodox monastery, located on a tiny island at the northern end of Snagov Lake. Legend has it that the monastery is the burial place of the infamous Prince of Wallachia, Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula. In the garden behind the church, enjoy a plum brandy tasting with local cheese. Afterward, continue with a visit to Mogosoaia Palace, the former residence of Wallachian royalty, built between 1698 – 1702. The palace is the finest surviving example of Romanian Renaissance architecture. Conclude the tour with a stroll along the beautiful manicured gardens by the lake and greenhouses.

It was beyond expectation and ran so smoothly it was scary. We kept waiting for a hiccup around the corner and it never happened! Our tour guide in Guayaquil was Fernando and he was great. Our Naturalist on board the Santa Cruz II was Sebastian and he was fantastic beyond belief. Our tour guide in Quito was extra special. Everyone met us at the appointed time. This is our 3rd trip with Gate 1 and most assuredly is not our last. We have mentioned your company to dozens of people and will continue to do so.
Bob D. Marco Island, FL
Our Gate 1 trip exceeded all expectations. The guides and assistants were very knowledgeable and helpful. The Monarch Empress was a newer ship and the crew were superb. The chef and food was excellent. Tours, (both optional and included) were enjoyable. Congratulations to Gate 1 tours.
Robyn K. QLD, Australia
We had a wonderful, worry-free trip. The Adriatic Queen was a very comfortable ship. The captain and crew were not only skilled sailors, but also friendly and willing to answer all of our questions. Our tour director, Lana, made every day and every stop interesting. The water in the Adriatic is so clean and clear. Our captain found us a safe place each day to anchor for a swim .... Our chef made delicious food and served it in gourmet style. Thanks for a terrific cruise.
Elizabeth M. Huntington Beach, CA
Excellent as always. Lana is one of the best trip managers I have seen. The ship was clean and in great shape, and the food was gourmet level. The crew was terrific, professional, friendly, and serving. A totally positive experience.
Allan G. Dumfries, VA
We enjoyed our Danube River Cruise very much. We had been on the bus trip from Prague to Budapest, but this was a different experiencing being on the river and sightseeing some different cities and villages. Beautiful scenery, great accommodations and fabulous food! Lots of history and the day excursions on foot or by bus were very fun and enlightening. Our guides were very knowledgeable too. We plan to take more Gate 1 trips. Thank you for a memorable trip!
Sue S. Luxemburg, WI
Fabulous! I could not complain about anything. Rui and our driver were wonderful. Congratulations to Gate 1, you exceeded our expectations.
Joan G. Huntingdale, Australia
Our trip was fantastic. It exceeded our expectations. The most important thing to having a trip of a lifetime was Gate 1’s addition of an outstanding tour guide, Constantine .. He was one of the best ... We want to return! We will use Gate 1 again.
Kathleen G. Virginia Beach, VA
This was our first Gate 1 tour and I must say it was outstanding. We saw so much of Greece, both the islands and mainland in the 2 weeks we were there. I couldn't have asked for more. Celestyal Crystal was an older ship, the crew kept it spic and span and provided such wonderful service ... The food was excellent and a good variety. The provided tours, drink package, and other add ons were great. Although the cruise was contracted to Celestyal, having Constantine and Julia along to guide us through things and insure we got everything we were supposed to was stellar. The hotels and their buffets were great. We had a free cooking class for lunch, that was great; thank you Gate 1 ... All the Gate 1 personnel at the airport, hotels, tours, etc were super. This was an outstanding value for the money! We ran into many other people on this trip that had been on prior Gate 1 tours and could only say the best things. We look forward to traveling with them in the future, possibly a Russian river cruise in 2020. We're already committed through 2019. Once again, thanks for a wonderful experience Gate 1!
Edward D. The Villages, FL
We had an amazing trip. We speak very highly of Gate 1 Travel and the lengths the company went to to ensure we got maximum time on the boat while the water levels were so low. We appreciated it.
Jeanette, D. Palmerston North, New Zealand
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our vacation trip to Greece and Turkey. The cruise for seven days was delightful and convenient for us. Loved the entertainment on board the cruise ship, the food preparation and Greek dancing lessons. We have told our friends to try Gate 1 Travel for their vacation trips.
Jay F. Detroit, MI
My tour to Norway was wonderful! I especially liked Stephanie Johannssen, who was our tour group leader. She was excellent! Caring, giving personal service, knowledgeable about Norway, telling us wonderful stories, and very friendly and efficient. The bus tours were very good, and the Hurtigruten cruise was very good.
Laraine Y. Honolulu, HI
It was a wonderful trip and we have absolutely no complaints, only praise ... Our tour director (Adriene) was unbelievably attentive and also upbeat even at the most challenging times, and Activity Cooridinator (Daniele) always had something going for us to look forward to. The dining room staff, reception staff, and cabin staff were equally attentive. The food was excellent and there was always plenty to choose from. The small size of the boat allowed us to meet and get to know many great people that we plan on keeping in contact with. Every day was extremely well-organized and our time at each stop was utilized to the max. We will definitely recommend this cruise to others.
Donna C. Staatsburg, NY
We had a wonderful time! Everything was so organized and there was so much to do. This was our first time on this type of cruise and I would highly recommend it, especially for people who do not like crowded ships! The staff on board were wonderful and so accommodating! All of the tour guides were professional and so knowledgeable! Our cruise tour director, Soma, was wonderful and so organized! The crew members were all great! Thanks again for making our trip a success and hassle-free!
Sandra H. Greenwich, RI
We had a wonderful time on the Monarch. Jean Pierre was great and all trips went like clockwork. Guides were all excellent. Dining was perfect with good food. Cabins were spacious and well equiped. To cap it all we had wonderful weather. We would certainly use Gate 1 again.
Michael G. new South Wales, AU
We had a great time. Devon was cute as a button, welcoming and included everyone as part of our tour family. She was knowledgeable about Alaska and the sites that we visited. Jesse, our driver, was really nice and he went out of his way to tell us about places that we were seeing and stopped so we could look at Denali when it was in full view. It was very spectacular. We had great weather and the trip was very smooth and pleasant. When we got to the cruise, we already had several nice acquaintances and it was fun running into each other on the cruise and even having dinner and social time with some people that we met on the land tour.
Victoria B. Stony Brook, NY
We had a wonderful trip. It was our first cruise of any kind and all our expectations were met. We have no interest in large cruise ships and really enjoyed the intimacy of the smaller river boat. The staff were great, food was very good and with a nice number of options, and we enjoyed the arranged walking and bus tours with local guides. We hope to do this again some day and will definitely recommend Gate 1 and the river cruise to others.
