Know Before You Book - High & Low Water

European river cruising has gained in popularity for very good reason. It's a relaxing and convenient way to experience Europe while enjoying the comfort of a deluxe ship. However, before making the decision to reserve your vacation, please be aware of potential conditions which may impact your cruise. While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On very rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. These events typically occur with little or no notice. In the event that a cruise is partially or completely impacted, the itinerary will be operated by deluxe motor coach, accompanied by a Tour Manager, with overnights in hotels. The itinerary will include as many of the originally scheduled sightseeing features as possible, considering the travel time and distances required, as well as meals. While it is not possible to recreate the more leisurely comforts of sailings, we will endeavor to provide a comparable itinerary. These alternative services will be provided at no additional charge.

Entry Requirements:
Passengers traveling abroad require a passport valid for six months beyond their travel dates. All travelers are responsible to check if a visa is required for all countries on their itinerary. For visa information, check our Visas page.

Is This Trip Right for You?

This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. Expect from three to four hours walking every touring day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. There is a potential for a small number of sailings to be impacted by river water levels, or other factors which may impact safe navigation. This may cause part or all of the cruise itinerary to be operated by motor coach and may also involve hotel accommodations.

We loved the trip. Had excellent weather and a wonderful, organized, personable, and knowledgeable tour guide (Corinna). I came away with a whole new (positive) picture of France as a result. The hotels were wonderful, the meals very good, and the sites were beautiful. This was our second Gate 1 trip and we'll be seeing you again in another location!

It was fantastic! Anne was an amazing guide. She was so attentive to everyone’s individual needs and request. I really enjoyed the small group. The itinerary was excellent. We learned so much about WWll in Normandy, experienced the beauty of Monet’s house and garden, and stayed at a gorgeous Chateau in Loire Valley, it was a perfect trip that I will be recommending to everyone!

The trip was wonderful! We had perfect weather so the sailing was smooth. The tulips were in full bloom! Pictures cannot do the colors justice. The cruise director, Jean-Pierre, and the activities director, Nadhem, were great and kept us moving and on schedule...The captain and crew couldn't do enough and were friendly and approachable- including the captain. It was nice to be on a small ship. It felt very intimate. We were able to meet most of the passengers on board and made several friends we will continue to communicate with. We will recommend river cruising and Gate 1 Travel to everyone we know!

Our trip was GREAT!!! It was pretty cool, windy and rainy some days there, but I know that Gate 1 didn't have a thing to do with that. Ha. Our tour director, Ann, was fabulous. She was very knowledgeable about the places we were visiting, and she was super nice as well. She had a great attitude and was very accommodating to everyone on the trip. I would give her an A plus for her job. Our bus driver, George, did a great job of keeping us safe and getting us where we were scheduled to be on time. I would give him an A plus as well. Our bus was very comfortable and it was easy to see the beautiful scenery with the nice, wide windows. I loved that they had cooled bottled waters for us every day. Our hotels were great too. Several people on our trip had been on Gate 1 trips before, and they all had nice things to say about Gate 1.

There is no doubt whatsoever that we had the very best Gate 1 had to offer on out Classic Tour of France. Gate 1 should be grateful that they have in their employ our tour manager, Craig, and his accompanying drivers, Alain & Daniel. Craig's knowledge of the history made our trip one that was fuelled with the rich history of France and an enviable memory for dates and the names of the nobility. He successfully combined with this an engaging personality. I observed, from my own work experience, his ability to respond with sincerity to anything that was asked of him. Importantly, he clearly enjoys his chosen occupation and that shows at all stages of his tour management. This is our second Gate 1 tour but not our last.

We were very happy with our tour to Paris/Loire Valley and Normandy. Representatives at the airport were waiting for us when we arrived to take us to our hotel. All three hotels visited throughout our trip were extremely nice, clean and in the heart of where we were visiting. All meals provided by Gate 1 were both very good and in wonderful restaurants, especially our final meal as a group where we had an excellent meal with entertainment to end our tour with our other tour members. However what really makes a trip memorable is your tour guide and we had one of the best with Jennie. In our many travels, she was the best time manager we have ever experienced getting us to the tour sites with no waiting, beating the crowds and still allowing us plenty of time to enjoy the sites. She was extremely knowledgeable on site histories and had a wonderful sense of what was important to the group, this was especially evident when in Normandy making sure we visited the areas that our veterans met with such opposition during the landings. In addition to being a wonderful tour guide, she was wonderful assisting us in any questions, reservations or logistics that we had when on our personal time. All in all, Gate 1 did a great job and we would not hesitate taking more trips with your company.

Our trip was one of the most fantastic experiences we have ever had. Our guide (Simeon) was very charming and knowledgeable about all of the locations we visited on the trip. From hotel check in to tickets for entry to side tours, all was handled ahead of time to move our group along in a hassle free enjoyable trip. From Simeon marking our maps to get us around town on our free time to head counts and making sure all were accounted for. We will definitely use Gate 1 again, possibly as soon as next year for a trip to Spain or the Canadian Rockies. I am spreading the word on your behalf of how Gate 1 can make a dream trip become THE trip of a lifetime.

We had a wonderful time. This trip was very special since we were celebrating our 50 wedding anniversary. When we got married we could not afford a honeymoon, so we took this perfect trip to celebrating our 50 year late Honeymoon. The tour was perfect for us as I am an artist and a retired art teacher. We were able to visit places that I have only dreamed about: Monet's Garden, house and lily ponds, Leonardo De Vinci's Amboise house and workshop, and Vincent Van Gogh's Arles and St. Paul's Asylum. We also wanted to see Paris, Mont St Michel, the Normandie coast, Tours with its chateaux, cathedrals, Avignon, Nice Monaco, and the Mediterranean Sea. This trip was perfect! Great weather, great food, great traveling companions and especially Siméon, our tour guide/manager. He brought history and locations alive. Great personality and good humor. Enjoyed this whole experience! Thank you Gate 1! Looking forward to traveling with you again, maybe next year.

It was a very good trip. The group size was ideal. Seeing and tasting along the French countryside was perfect. My favorite was the Bordeaux countryside dinner (optional tour). But to stroll through the many small towns was interesting at best. The flexibility and free time were a plus. I cannot praise our tour director, Craig, enough. He was organized, thorough, focused and always kept the group together. He was so thorough in relating the histories, and background information of all our sights was the best. He was always prepared, patient, and his little touches of serving local aperitifs and treats were a delight. He was always approachable and had a great attitude. I highly recommend this tour and Gate 1 to friends and family.

He provided wonderful insight to French history and culture and offered great suggestions for things to do and where to eat. Fortunately with our arrival the weather broke and we had primarily partly sunny to sunny days throughout our tour. The itinerary was excellent, the accommodations were great and the professionalism of the Tour Manager, local guides and motor coach drivers was fantastic. My wife and I are already starting to plan our next Gate 1 Tour for 2017.

It was fantastic. We can't say enough nice things about our guide, Ginny. She was very informative, friendly, and helpful. Although it rained everyday of the tour, we took it in stride and did not deter from our enjoyment. The hotels were nice, the bus was comfortable, food was great, and the other tourists were fun to be with. Our next tour will certainly be Gate 1! Thanks for a wonderful trip! The bus driver, Phillipe, was a great guy and careful driver!

We were a party of 8 family members traveling together celebrating graduations and anniversaries. Our trip was amazing, showcasing the major sights in Paris, Tours, Bayeau, and Giverny. The northern countryside offered a relaxed step backward in time at the vineyards and châteaus. Normandy was a beautiful but sobering memorial for us (Americans). Mount St Michel and Claude Monet's gardens were as interesting as lovely. Versailles was a breathtaking understanding behind the French revolution. Our tour guide was Jamil who was a wonderful mentor with a humorous touch. He made our anniversary celebration very special. Our group ranged from ages 19 to 76 and this tour accommodated everyone's interests. The food was delicious, the company special, and the other 31 participants were fun to befriend. The only thing I would have added would have been a short evening excursion to the Louvre. We were well pleased with Gate 1. Thank you!

Our tour manager, Jamil, was wonderful. He was so knowledgeable, kind and helpful throughout the trip. One of the areas of the tour was Normandy and in our group was a WWII veteran named Henry. It was so nice to have shared this visit with him and his family. At the American Cemetery, Jamil made a special moment for Henry so we as a group could thank him for his service and we sang the National Anthem. Actions like this make a outstanding tour manager. This was my second trip with Gate 1. Looking forward to another.
